I have the sigma 85mm f/1.4 ex dg hsm lens and was wondering your opinion on the Canon 85mm 1.4L IS. I would love to have image stabilization. I'm thinking of selling my Sigma and purchasing the Canon. Before I bite the bullet, I thought I would ask what you thought of the Canon with IS. Also, is it worth it just for the IS?

I would imagine that the Canon being an "L" lens is also a better lens.
Have you checked to see if each is on DPReview.com?

Yes I've done research on the Canon lens. I always research first before I come here. People tend to get a little crabby on this site if you don't. Lol
Thank you for your input, the "L" lenses are great.

The new Sigma Art lenses are actually optically better than the Canon L's, well not in all focal lengths but in both the 85mm and the 135mm the Sigma Art smokes the Canons. The Sigma Art does not however have Image Stabilization.

I've looked at that one too, however like you stated, no IS.

How badly do you NEED IS ?? ......I would be using facial stabilizers and mini-pod grip on my camera body with that lens @ slower shutter speeds - IMO, IS is a compromise of the optical design/formula ....

To the best of my knowledge, Canon never made a 85 f/1.4 lens. They make a 1.2 and a 1.8 but I never heard of a 1.4, and neither has IS. In the minds of Canon engineers the 85mm lend is used primarily for portraiture and the camera more often than not will be on a tripod; no need for IS. I have the 85 f/1.2L and it is a big piece of glass; extremely shallow DOF and super bokehlishious.
If you want something for doing portraits that has IS, try the EF 100 f/2.8L

I'd put my EF 85 f/1.2L up against a Sigma any day. The Sigma will auto focus faster but that's not important to me.

Cool. It's pretty new so it's not yet on the Canon lens museum list. I gotta get me one of them.

Why would I talk about a lens that didn't exist?
Lol.

You didn’t, it’s just people love to jump in without knowing what they’re talking about. Can’t comment on your problem Tracy, I’ve always stuck with Canon L lenses but you can only go on advise from people who tried both. Very few people buy a lens and then admit a third party one is better and particularly vice versa. Good luck.

This is true Mike. I asked a customer service rep. on a chat at Adorama. She said I probably wouldn't notice a difference between the lens I have and the Canon unless I shot sports with it. I am so impressed that She wouldn't just try and sell me the lens. I do shoot sports but I use my Canon 70-200 f2.8 L with my 2x Extender for that.
