I drove up the coast from San Luis Obispo to Monterey yesterday before turning inland on my way home to Sacramento. I decided to take State Route 1 along the coast because I had nothing better to do and it was a great chance to see some beautiful scenery. I stopped at a place just north of San Simeon where Hearst Castle is located, which happens to be the west coast's elephant seal rookery. All the big boys were there. Some go as large as 5000 lb or about 2600 kg for our non-American friends. That's about the size of the Ford F-150 pickup truck to give you some scale for these animals. The pictures don't do their massive size justice.
The male's proboscis is used to make a deep resonant grunting sound to warn off competitors.

Thanks, I never get tired of watching them. Standing downwind of them is another experience. They stink.
Thanks for commenting. Glad you liked it.
They can really get into it with each other...nicely captured.
