Silicone covers

This may have been covered before. I apologize if it has been asked before. Is the silicone covers good for the cameras or do they somehow hinder the function of the camera. I am a little hard on camera when or where I go hiking and it would really help if I got one as long as it doesn't ruin the camera's operation?

Good for light shock protection. Bad because they trap moisture between them and the body.

I have one for my Sony A7Rii. Everything operates fine but it is a bit liking trying to waltz in wellington boots. I took it off after a couple of weeks. I would consider using it for a rugged outing, but I wouldn't leave it on full time. For $10 or so - get one. What are you going to lose?

I have one on my D7100 and really like it. I read on a previous post that dust or grit can get under it and that will really affect the appearance you are trying to protect and the same for trapped moisture. I have checked my camera and it still looks like it did when I bought it. The only negative was reading the button titles but once you know where they are, you won't have any problem.

I was enamored with the silicone cover the first time I saw one. After doing some research I found that they trap moisture between the cover and the camera. Additionally, they trap dirt. That grit becomes abrasive and any little movement between the cover and the camera works like sandpaper on both.

What Bob said is possible but I have checked under my cover a number of times and have not found that to have happened. I just read another topic where the owner of a new Nikon 7200 was asking about getting the camera repaired where he dropped it and the auto focus stopped working and there is a crack in one corner of the body. Bet he would have liked having one! It really comes down to how you handle your equipment and in what environment you use the camera. It is not for everyone!

Thanks a bunch, I think the part time use is a good idea, especially when hiking. I'll just keep in mind that I should clean the camera after each use. Thank you all so much.

Two years with one (Camo-colored) on my D7100. Been to Yellowstone twice as well as Glacier, Black Hills and Badlands. I do lots of out in the woods and on the ground stuff. I take it off if I do something more formal, but it goes right back on. The camera is as pristine looking as the day I unwrapped it.
