El Morro National Monument - Well kept secret of New Mexico!

This National Monument is a spectacular place!! It was a destination point for travelers, soldiers, Spanish gold seekers, and Catholic missionaries. The water hole never is dry! And this is the desert!! There was once a pueblo of over a thousand dwellers up on the top! There is reported to be over 1,000 inscriptions carved in the rock! The names, script, Spanish and English, and the dates are amazing to see! There is a very small campsite about a mile away from the Monument and visitor's center. It is pristine! I'll post another gallery of the birds I shot there. It is quite a surprising treasure!!!

Looks like an interesting place! Thanks for the post. A friend of mine moved to NM a couple years ago. I'll ask if he knows about and been there.

I am a native New Mexican and El Morro is one of the most special places in the state. There is a very nice visitor's center and you often have the monument pretty much to yourself. If you take a nice hike to the top of the mesa there is an ancient pueblo site worth the walk. My son and I really like the campsite. It is one of the most peaceful and quiet places you will ever find. Indeed, you can sense the many travelers who have passed that way over the last few centuries. Well worth the drive to get there.

On the way, you can visit the lava flow Malpais, the ice cave and an extinct volcano crater.

Thanks to a very nice lady at the KOA I stayed at in Grants, NM, I made a stop there back in April and couldn't agree more. Great place to visit and the views from the top are absolutely stunning.
