Forget a Fast Car. Creativity Is the New Midlife Crisis Cure
Interesting article. Some of us left "middle age" in the rear view a while ago.
Yes, they maybe on to something but it sure isn't showing up in camera sales as yet.

I could not agree more. I always tell people, that I can't dance, sing, paint or play the piano, but intensifying a long lost love of photography, that has been on hold while earing a living, gives me great satisfaction, and sense of achievement. It is both challenging, and satisfying, especially when you throw in post-processing and the third leg that I have not attempted yet, the art of printing. It keeps me very stimulated. But, of course, I haul my gear to each shooting location in a shiny, red Mustang convertible.

Mike,
You must be referring to "Elementary Middle Age." As the Calendar turns people, over time, progress to "Middle-Middle Age' and then into a very long period of "Intermediate Middle Age, with low, medium and advance sub stages." The future development into "Advanced and Expert Middle Age" levels are their own reward, akin to Double and Triple Black Diamond ski run ratings.
By my figuring, only those in the next dimension have Middle Age, in some form, in their rear view mirror. And, I suppose there's the Green, Blue and Black variants, like skiing in that realm too. In my imagination, there's lots of learning and growing still left to do.
Hope its sunny and clear in Utah,

I like the way you think, Craig.
I never had time for a mid life crisis or much in the way of hobbies when I was working. But I was lucky in that I could be creative at work.
Retirement gave me the chance to have hobbies like photography, videography, playing music. But I get as much enjoyment from watching a really good movie or socializing or playing with my dog as I do "being creative" in my hobbies. And nothing beats romance. Mid life crisis is a crisis of commitment and imagination at any age. I have a hard time identifying with the type of people written about. Opening a jazz club? I have a hard time openng a jar of almond butter.
I don't believe much of anything in the New York Times, including this. I suspect people getting "creative" in their 40's and 50's (by the way 50's is past middle age - how many people do you know who are over 100 years old?) because at that age most of our kids are grown, giving us much more "free" time; combined with that being the age at which our incomes allow us to spend more on ourselves and our whims.
Creativity is what happens when work no longer cuts it and you need another outlet for your mind to exert its energy.
It's nice, though, if you can combine taking photographs of that hot new car.

Photography is cheaper than a fast car and a whole lot less expensive and bothersome than a new teenage bride.
By the way.......how many 100 + people are there these days? it certainly aint a high probability % despite eveyone saying "you will live longer if you stop xxxxx"

You're right! As much as cameras cost, they're cheaper than a tune-up for an exotic car. As for the young bride, I don't even want to think about that situation. : )
I doubt that people in their thirties want to be called "middle aged."
