At Alameda Point, California. The fourth shot shows mom, flying. The fifth and sixth show the unfortunate male entangled in fishing tackle, with fishing line even wrapped on his wing. After the day I took this shot three weeks ago, the male was never seen again.
Against all odds, mom has proven to be an excellent hunter and protectress. One of the three chicks is already taking short flights, with the others hopefully not too far behind.
Used Nikon D500 with 300mm f4 VR PF, some with 1.4x TC. From my boat.
Very nice series! It is a shame about the male.
Wonderful photos, sad story. This is not an uncommon thing to happen to water birds, unfortunately.

Thanks. Wish it hadn't happened this way.
