I was cleaning up some old files and came across this image from 3 years ago from a public garden in the middle of a neighborhood in NW Philadelphia. Been trying to figure out whether it's a fly or bee and haven't had any success in obtaining an answer from Google or BG. Anyone have an idea what we're looking at here? Incidentally, I'm pretty sure that I did not have a macro lens on the camera.
I believe it to be a Hover Fly for it only has two wings.

I believe you're correct. I'm curious about the orange triangles on it's sides and if that makes it a specific species of hoverfly?
Hoverfly, aka Syrphid fly. The latter is in reference to its being in the family Syrphidae.
A fly can be recognized by various means. First and foremost is it has 1 pair of wings rather than 2 pairs. The particular group of families to which this belongs has short antennae and a distinctive ^ shaped suture on its face, with the upper end at the base of the antennae.
