The Children's Museum is great. Inside is done using architecture from demolished buildings around St. Louis. They had off hours just for photography as to avoid usual Patrons.

Is that the same as the City Museum?

Loved that place when our kids were younger!

I did not realize there were so many of us, on here, who live in St. Louis. Cool!

I live in Downtown Chicago and I'm pretty used to fending off scumbags, so I'm not so concerned about safety as good shots without really asking for trouble

What about a warehouse area?

ESL is much worse than Downtown Chiraq.....and way more racist. Take your pics in StL proper.

I totally agree with everything said about ESL. It's sad, for I'm sure there are some good people there. But we never hear about them, only about the bad things happening there.

Around St. Louis, city and county, you will find an infinite variety of photo subjects.

How about drinking some great tasting cold beer while there. And have some great St. Louis BBQ with it. Yes, St. Louis does have a lot of murders, crimes, etc. My father 20 years ago was there, and was stalked by someone. This was before everyone had a cell phone too. He was able to get to a safety spot to avoid a potential robbery? The St. Louis Cardinals have an iconic baseball team too. Many World Series and Playoffs appearances in past years. The Stadium would be a start for photography.

If anyone is following this thread because they are planning a road trip through the area and has reservations about St. Louis, there is an alternate route. Round trips used to be a several times a year event for us and going through St. Louis was never a hi-point for many reasons. We found that crossing the Mississippi at Hannibal, MO made for a better trip and the added 35 or so miles were a minor consideration when compared to the ~2000 mile total.
Check the routing on Goggle maps.

Before anyone draws a conclusion that all of STL is ridden with daily crime, I want to go on record that, unfortunately, the incidents are concentrated in certain spots. North city and North county is rather the epicenter, to which I feel sorry for all the wonderful folks who live there. There are some spots elsewhere, but I must tell you that we live in a historic district just south of downtown and we have absolutely no worries and we move around our area, enjoy the shops and stores, and enjoy the great restaurants.

I'm reminded about a time or two in which high flood levels via the Mississippi river caused some downtown to experience high levels. We'd then received calls and e-mails inquiring if all of St. Louis was under water. I would not trade where we live for anything. It's a wonderful place to live, and yes, to photograph as well.

My wife, Two youngest boys and I went on a road trip to KC and St. Louis last month. We stayed in Pontoon Beach Illinois, where KMOX is located after a Friday night Cardinals game. I took my Nikon D3400 up to the top of the Arch and also on the riverboat cruise on the Mississippi, you can buy those as a bundle and save a couple dollars.

If you're just passing through, you can avoid the nasty parts of St Louis/East St Louis by just using the outer loop (I255 in IL, I270 in MO) which connects I55, I64 and I70 in IL with I55, I64 and I70 in MO. But you'll be mostly in farm country in IL, and pretty far from the bad parts of St. Louis in MO. There can be rush hour slowdowns, as you'd expect in any metro area, but you add only a couple of miles compared to going through ESL and downtown STL.

Let me second this info, which is actually true for the country as a whole. I read a story recently that said there are over 100,000 precincts in the US, and if you disregarded the murders committed in 1000 of them, the national murder rate would drop by something like 2/3. (On worldwide rankings we'd be down near the bottom, with Switzerland.) So the majority of murders are committed in less than 1% of the precicts.

Don't know if this precise ratio holds in St Louis, but it's true in general, as elliott937 says. The cops can tell you by neighborhood, sometimes by city block, where the real trouble spots are, but of course they don't publish that info for fear of driving the PC crowd into the streets screeching "racism."

The Arch area, Old Courthouse area, the Busch stadium area,

Hey--Great! That's a cool looking building and right at the arch. The capitol bldg. in Jeff City should be so stately.

Thanks everybody! I will definitely try some BBQ and heaps of cold beer and perhaps I can come back and tell my. fellow Chicagoans there is life beyond Michigan Avenue and Wrigley Field and Gino's Deep Dish Pizza

A good place to get pictures of the Arch and surrounding area is from East St. Louis at the Malcolm Martin viewing platform. It is near the Casino Queen. I would only go during the day and/or early evening. I have some good sunset pics from there.

I have shot the arch from this location on two occasions. In both instances I wanted blue hour shots. Finally got what I was looking for on the last outing. Be aware that at certain times of the year they close the park at sundown. A security guard escorted me out just after I got the attached shot.

Perfect Blue Hour shot!

Were you by that fountain?

What month and day was this taken?

Sunset will be 8:15 when I'll be there

Thanks. I was on the viewing platform that joanloy described. Just before the blue hour changed to dark.
I believe the date was April 3.
