Mt Evans, Colorado

I recently went to Mt Evans Colorado, outside Idaho Springs. Mt Evans is the second highest paved road in the world at over 14,000 ft! Late June, the babies are usually out such as Mountain Goat kids and Big Horn Sheep lambs.

For the most part, the animals don't care about humans. They just go about their business eating the clover and dirt (for minerals).

It can be 30 degrees or more difference in temperature from the bottom of the mountain to the top. If you go, remember a warm coat. Don't forget to bring water and sunscreen.

Highly recommended during the summer.

Nice group of photos. I guess there is something about the weather and ice conditions at about 14,000 ft that destroys paving on roads. I've been to the Finger Lakes area in the Sierras and the end of the paved road is at about 10,000 ft above sea level. I was there on a photo class trip. My heart could not take the altitude with such thin air so I had to just sit in the car while my wife got all the good photographs. The hike would have been from 10k ft to 12k ft in 4 miles. She did really well for a non-photographer. On the same trip we visited Lone Pine on the Owens Valley floor just below Mount Whitney (14,505 ft)! And not actually far away is the lowest point in the USA, Death Valley, CA (negative 282 feet below sea level). Driving Hwy 395 is a fantastic experience!

Breathing was a little more labored. But for me, I didn’t like the switchbacks.

Thanks for the info. I will have to check it out sometime.

Enjoyable series!!!
I've been up there a couple of times.
Wearing blue jeans and coat and the wind chill, the wind just blew the very cold temps through me.

My first trip up Mount Evans was in a pickup truck, in July. We packed a picnic lunch in a cooler, in the bed of the truck. We arrived at the parking lot at the top, just as a storm arrived. What an experience! At that altitude, you are in the storm. We had our picnic, reaching through the back window and fishing items out of the cooler, while getting pelted by marble sized hail. It was one way to learn the lesson, that any high altitude trips are best done in the morning.

Ha! I can relate. We had a snow squeal while up there. Thankfully it didn’t last long. Thanks for sharing!

So, where are the "good" photographs your "non-photographer" wife took?

Very nice series, Suzanne! BTW Idaho Springs was the "home" of Robert Redford in "Downhill Skier."
