Many don't realize it, but there are female Buddhist monks. You can tell them from the males by the gray that they wear. Otherwise, they shave their heads as the males do and perform all of the same duties as the males do. They are typically segregated from the males as well and live in all-female monasteries. Occasionally in smaller villages they may work together, but the housing is of course still segregated. Such was the case here, where a very small monastery was built into the side of a small mountain and had both males, who lived in the structure proper and females, who lived in a building a little farther down the hill. Here, a female monk is seen in quiet contemplation during my visit to this place on the outskirts of Jinghua, China. A simple portrait, but I like it and the soft available light. Nice informal portrait. Interesting story, too.
Pictures usually tell most of the story .., however .., your caption enhances the Picture .. nicely done ..
Thank you for a very interesting narrative and photograph.
Very well done, Mark. This is a sensitive portrait that reflects the nature of life as a Monk.
