SX40 Cheat Sheet Update

I use the hack, it is non-destructive and does not void the warranty. It takes a RAW and a jpeg at the same time. The SX40 does such a great job on jpeg, I don't always use RAW except for busy, and varied lighted landscapes that may need a lot of post processing. The hack offers so much more like a remote shutter release (you can make one for a couple of bucks).

This cheat sheet includes the things my feeble 75 yr old mind needs reminding of, it is not a total manual, just what I'm interested in, thus you may have to add your points of interest. There are about three and 1/2 pages to do so. I have it in three formats: Word; Word Perfect; and rtf (supposedly pretty universal) Let me know what format you want.

I would love a cheatsheet in Word. Also, how do you make a remote release for the SX40? Lastly, can you tell me more about Hack?

Send me a pm with your e-mail and I will send you the cheat sheet. Go to www.chdk.wikia.com/wiki/CHDK for the hack and an explanation of what it does. Then go to www.youtube.com and search for Big Nate 84, he has a video on how to make one for around $.6.00

It is a software program that goes on your camera's SD chip. It is non destructive to the camera, and only operates when you call it up. It programs your camera to do many functions it cannot do without the hack. Go to www.chdk.wikia.com/wiki/CHDK for the hack and info on it.

You use the SD card in your camera. The procedure for downloading and installing is found at www.chdk.wikia.com/wiki/CHDK It sounds more complicated than it really is, just follow the instructions and it works out. If I can be of further help don't hesitate to ask.

I was getting excited by this thread, until I went to www.chdk.wikia.com/wiki/CHDK and foud out it is for cannon. I wonder if there is something similar for Nikon.

Old Sarge! I've been reading, with quite a bit of interest, your reponse about the Canon SX40, and using a hack. Would you also send me a cheat sheet for Word? I don't yet own an sx40, but really want one and the auto shutter release and being able to do something different such as shoot RAW sounds interesting. Thank you, dryart38! My email is: snow_george @ hotmail.com

George: I also suggest going to www.shortcourses.com and ordering "A Short Course in Canon SX40." It is modestly priced and a fantastic reference book. Good luck with your new camera. Be sure to post some pics for us.

djmills! Thanks for the info! Are you related at all to a Phil Mills who had a commercial photography business in Philadelphia, PA? I worked for him for a couple of years before going into Newpaper Photography in the 60's. I don't have the camera yet - it may be a few months before I acquire one - insufficient funds right now!

No relation that I know of. If he has money to pass on, I'll find some connection.

Keep me posted on the SX40. I am 100% satisfied with mine.

djmills! I just thought I'd ask about the photographer! I seen a couple of Mill bylines on the "Miami CSI" also, and wondered about that one too.
I usually check out any camera that holds my interest by getting online with dpreview.com, and look at the specs and the images. I check for image quality and features - I definitely want the articulated back and the Canon has a much better articulated movement than the Nikon P510 - it also looks much sturdier. There weren't any user images on there for the SX40, so I'm glad to hear that so many folks like the image quality. Also, I like at least 15 secs for a slow shutter speed to maybe catch lightning when it's active during a storm. Right now, I own a FinePix s8100fd bridge camera, but I'd like more than 4 secs slow speed - it's too touch and go! When I get the dough, I'll try to get an SX40 on eBay, possibly used, to save money - I've had decent luck on eBay - I got my S8100fd on eBay refurbished, and it was like new, working perfectly! Thanks again for your input!
