I have all of this Pro Editing software, why am I not using it.
I posted some shots a few days ago, and didn't get any comments, and I think I know why. The first image looked washed out, and the first image is the most important one so I took a look again using the NIK collection.
Here is the original posting:
http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-538765-1.htmlI attached the original image and the one using NIK. did I overdo it, or was it what was needed to make the image pop?
Editing is a very personal and subjective thing and you will get many opinions. I don't particularly care for what you did, but I'm not your client
Re not receiving comments: Photo Gallery is so large (100+ topics posted per day) that postings can get lost quickly. If you make it into the daily digest (about 30 links are there, I believe), generally more people will see it. For feedback, check out "all sections" at the bottom of this page for specialty forums.
You have added detail to the lights. That's fine, but you need to check your black point. You have no black in your post processed image. You have also lowered the contrast a bit too much. Nik's Detail enhancer will do that. It's powerful. Just don't use it at full strength.
Making sure you have black and white points helps with the color too.

Thank you for your honest reply Linda. I am still new to processing. I have only been shooting digital for less than a year. There is no client. I only shoot for my own pleasure.

Thank you. I need to work on the finesse of processing.
Thank you so much for the resource link Linda. I will definitely check it out.

Now that is more like what I was looking for. Thank you so much.

Oh me too! I was just making the point, with a smile, that others' opinions are most valuable when we're struggling with a specific concept or edit and can't figure out the issue. Fotoartist already gave you a great tip so you're on your way!

I thought I had posted this to the "Photo Analysis" section. Sorry about that.
"I have all of this Pro Editing software, why am I not using it?"
Probably because it is fairly complicated and has a major league learning curve to get it right.
Then add in the sequence for the manuals you are supposed to learn from:
1. A software engineer gives the instructions in "geek techno speak"
2. A writer with a degree in "left handed underwater basket weaving" and relatively poor writing/communication skills does the formal draft
3. An editor with zero knowledge of the subject and even worse communication skills makes some changes to justify his/her job.
4. Someone in the publishing department now types, formats etc to make it into a booklet - making changes to fit the booklet's page format. And hopefully doesn't lose track of which parts go with which other parts and the illustrations actually fit the words.
5. If this was done in a language other than English you have someone translate it - the original language is the translator's second language and English is their third language. And while learning both those languages they spent a lot of class time on their smart phone texting their best friend back home and taking naps to make up for the sleep they lost partying almost every night.
A. So find a friend who already knows how to use the PP apps you have.
B. Do it by the old "trial and error", mostly "error" method.
C. Search YouTube for tutorials, hopefully in English and hopefully by someone who knows what they are talking about, can speak in a way comprehensible to you and can go from the beginning to the end of each lesson in an organized way without any "well everyone knows how to do that, so lets go to" or dozens of diversions to talk about their new shoes, what they had for lunch, etc etc etc. Oh, and spend just the right amount of time needed and not one minute longer.
Yes, I am a cynic and former classroom teacher.

Wow Robert. You have pretty much nailed it. I have to watch the videos several times and then I can't remember what I was looking for in the menu or some other nonsense. I suppose I could watch the video on my phone and start the program on the computer. Nah, that's too confusing. When it comes down to it, I need to make mistakes or I won't know what not to do. When I get stuck, I know where to come for help. Then I need to be a sponge and soak up all of the info that I can. Then one day I will create something so amazing that even I won't be able to look away. Thanks

Robert's observations are priceless! That's why I like those Color Efex videos so much - they are short and very much to the point. And with a narrator who doesn't say "you know..." or "uhhh" or "ummm" every other sentence
