Taken at Na An Ku Se wildlife sanctuary. This is a "controlled" environment in which the animal is free (i.e. no cage), but in a designated area (which makes the chance of a sighting dramatically enhanced). The chance of seeing this cat in the wild AND in a position to take a photograph is remote. I saw one for a very fleeting moment, at night, in Etosha when I was observing black rhinos--but there was no chance for a photograph. Namibia has a range of viewing options--lots of reserves, private "farms" etc. I am not sure what I think of this eco tourism boom. On balance, a good thing--but I much prefer to catch a photo in a non-controlled environment. However, I would not have gotten such a shot of this type of cat on this trip--because I never saw another except for a fleeting moment. This has been cropped to 8x10, but the download should otherwise be full sized.
He is a beauty and the detail in the download is exceptional. Great capture.

When is a pose not a pose? A truly majestic image. The resolution is spectacular. You should be very proud of this catch - no matter the circumstances.
Thanks for sharing.

Thank you very much. I particularly like the ears on this cat.

Thank you for your comments. I just wanted to be clear about the circumstances of the photo. I do like it very much. However, the number of farms, sanctuaries and private reserves in Namibia was surprising to me. I had not been exposed to this phenomenon on other trip to Africa.

There does seem to be quite a bit of controversy about the controlled, "unnatural" reserves all over the southern continent but most have to do with those used primarily for hunting.

Yes, though hunting on farms is better than poaching or the licenses given to hunt truly wild animals. As a photographer, something is lost when the animal is "controlled" by limiting its range to a designated area--say 5 acres--or tracking it with a collar. In Erindi, a few animals were tracked with collars--which I did not care for. However, I did see an untracked female lion there--which was great--probably born there--and a number of untracked rhinos--which we were lucky to see.
Thank you. Very glad to have gotten this shot.

Thank you. This was the only decent shot I got of this animal--as it was hanging out under a bush in the shade--no surprise given the intensity of the sun.
