What program are you using to create the slide show? Lightroom has that capability.Lots of slide show programs allow you to add music.

You can add with PowerPoint if you have MS Office. If you plan on putting it on Facebook keep in mind that they will check any music to see if you have rights to it or if it's free for anyone to use.
For music I would use something from Mannheim Steamroller.

Probably a jillion ways to do it.

I like to make slideshows with Picasa. Easy to add music. Takes about five minutes, once you have the pictures ready to go.

This is a fairly general statement, i.e., what software are you using? Or, did you mean you just want someone to suggest a song?

What works best for me is soft instrumental music (no vocals) for I found vocals to distract from what I wanted to convey with the pictures. You can set the timing of your slideshow to that of the music so that they start and end together. You can add additional music as well and allow the slideshow timing for the total length. The program will know the number of slides and it will know the total length of the music and automatically create equal timing for each slide for viewing.

I also found that simple fade-in and fade-out slide transitions worked best for me. I've seen far too many where the transitions of slides was too dramatic by flying in, flipping, spinning, exploding, etc. that made the presentation look disjointed and amateurish.

If your show will be used in a public, commercial venue, you have a few choices:

1. Create your own.
2. Pay musicians to do it for you.
3. Pay a production music company the fee to use their work.
4. Negotiate a license fee to use a popular song.

Music is just another form of licensed intellectual property — like literature, photos, software, and inventions. Be sure you use it appropriately.

Just because you download a song for $1.29, don’t think you have any right to use it in public or commercial settings. At that price, it’s for personal enjoyment.

As for what actual genre or title, I have no clue. I don’t fish.

I use PROSHOW GOLD from Photodex. That and one of their other products come very highly recommended in multimedia production. Excellent Support. However, as said you might very well be using a photo editing program that already does what you want in a "create" module.

Proshow Gold, add music, add video, hundreds of fade/transitions, control the timeline, control the length of time for both slides and fades. Control global time lengths of fade/transitions/slides even individually. Very comprehensive. Add naration via mic on the computer. Hold length on slides allow extensive or short narrations. etc.

d.butler44 does not say what software he uses.

Software for video editing works very well for slideshows intended for screens. Premiere Elements comes with a system to generate background music as well as to use audio files from any source. Vegas Home Studio does it too. Lightroom has a Slideshow module with an option for a soundtrack.

There are lots of internet providers of "royalty free" music intended for background music. Some is free and some costs.

If you do a google search for royalty free music, you will see lots of options. You need to read all the description as some are just free for personal use while others are completely free. Many musicians just want people to listen to their stuff in the hopes that something will become popular.

I have done exactly that by using iMovie. You can have nice transitions from one pic to the next. You can add titles, etc. You can add the music of your choice.

This link (below) will show an example of how I used iMovie for pics from the Chrysler Art Museum in Norfolk,VA.

There is such a thing as royalty free music - just Google it.

Do you currently have any kind of slideshow program software? Just about any slideshow software can add music to your slideshow but not all slideshow softwares are created equal. I use ProShow Producer by Photodex. It has all the "bells and whistles" in a slideshow program. This includes the ability to synch or time your music to certain photos to add more dramatic impact. I have been using it for about about 2-3 years now but still much to learn. You can also make copies of your show to regular DVD and Blu ray, USB flash drive and upload to Facebook, YouTube, Vimeo, etc.

The following is a sample of a photo (mixed with a couple video clips) slideshow I created a couple of summers ago using this software (under 4 min):
