I read the article because I have a subscription to Photography Life. Spencer Cox is an excellent landscape photographer and his articles are always full of facts and very interesting.
Scouting, if time allows, is a great way to find places to photograph. I would say using a tripod makes the camera very steady and helps with the visual design.
Trying to convey emotion in a photograph is not always easy but can be done, especially if the subject lends itself to convey an emotion like his beautiful photograph of the mountains and the storm.
