Hello everyone,

I’m looking for a decent Carbon Fiber Monopod for my Nikon D750. I would like to be able to interchange the foot to 3 legs. Any suggestions greatly appreciated!

The 3-Legged Thing line, and Manfrotto's BeFree products, allow you to unscrew on of the tripod legs and attach the ballhead, making it a monopod. Both brands have Carbon Fiber products. Is this what you are looking for?

No, I really would like a monopod. I own a Benro and a light weight tripod already.

Thanks for replying.

You should state what lens(es) you will use and what your subject matter is. That will get you a recommendation that is not the generic "I use this or that monopod and I love it" which also has no specifics as to it's application.

My apologies. I use 85mm f1.4 Basically landscapes and street photography.

I use a Sirui monopod. It’s carbon fiber, sturdy and easy to trek around. I love it!

Welcome to our forum. I would recommend a Sirui monopod. It’s carbon fiber, sturdy and economical. If you want to move up the food chain consider a Gitzo

Thank you PixelStan77, I think I’ll check into Gitzo.

Curious minds want to know. If it had 3 legs wouldn't that be a tripod? You can always keep the 3 tripod legs together as one, for the monopod experience.

I am thinking that the 85mm F1.4 is a bit heavy. Perhaps a 1.8 is a bit lighter. Then you might not need a monopod. In my experience over the past 51 yrs - I have found that the slight benefit (maybe) that it offers is hardly worth carrying the extra weight, not to mention the fact it is a little more cumbersome. On the other hand, for a long day of shooting at an event, the value of a monopod cannot be underestimated, if for no other reason but to support the camera and lens, which only gets "heavier" as the day goes on.

As far as subject material - the 85 F1.4 is extremely sharp - but at large apertures the edges and corners suffer from aberrations and lack of sharpness. it doesn't clean up until you hit F2.8. This is what makes it such a great tool for portraits, and less desirable for landscape, where consistent corner to corner performance is usually preferred. For street I think it is hard to use a long lens. Many street guys and gals use lenses between 28mm and 50mm, manual focus and using smaller apertures to provide greater depth of field. Manual focus and a good working "zone" of focus will mean most images within the zone will be in decent focus.

Agree. I use a Sirui P-326 with a Manfrotto 234RC monopod tilt head. Collapses to about 10”, is extremely light weight, but very sturdy. Have used it with my D500 and 200-500.

I asked a question about monopods yesterday and several hoggers mentioned Surui.
