I am debating about selling my older Canon lens for the new version of the TAMRON | SP 150-600mm F/5-6.3 Di VC USD G2 lens. I figure I could sell the cannon lens that would pay for a good part of the Tamron (best price found on net is 920) lens. My question is have any of you guys made this switch and if so what are your thoughts on this or regrets? I know the aperture range is a bit better on the Canon lens. The only other choice would be to sell the canon lens and buy the newer version but would need to cough up another 1K that I really do not have. I did not want to make the switch until I get some additional info on this. Thanks!

Forget to mention that I do currently own the 2.8 70 to 200MM so this will fill the gaps with either lens

Sorry did not mention that I own the 70 200 2.8 Canon lens has IS II stabilization And the zoom is built into it in the lenses which I like instead of the push pull I do have the first edtion 1.4 Canon canon extender and the CANON 2x is a III newer converter. So add this into your thought how well does the Tamron work with the Canon extenders. The main thing I have read is that the tamrom focuses better / faster. Sorry for all these post.

Doesn't look like you need the extra reach of the 150-600, since you are also considering the newer Canon. So what is the main reason you want to buy a new lens?

I have both lenses and find them to be very similar in. Image quality. The big difference is the extra 200mm that the Tamron G2 provides. What do you shoot? I use the Tamron for wildlife and can use all the reach I can carry. I can handhold the G2. You also mention that you have the 2.8 70-200 and extenders. I have read that the 2.8 with the 2x extender gives similar results to the original 100-400. Have you made that comparison? Maybe a 100-400 lenses is redundant for you.
But another option for getting the Canon 100-400 ii is to buy a refurbished one from Canon Direct. They come with a one year warrantee. I think they are selling for $1799. I have bought many cameras and lenses that way and have never had a problem.

The best Canon lens I have seen for wildlife photography, for the price ( I am assuming that is why you want the Tampon 150-600) is the Canon 100-400 II version. Yes, it is more expensive than the Tamron 150-600. The Canon 100-400 version I is not comparable to the Tampon 150-600. The 100-400 II is so much better. If your serious about your photography, sell whatever you can, save up and get the Canon 100-400 II. You WILL not regret your decision. And I will be happier too.

I also have both and use the Tamron almost exclusively but still carry the Canon on trips. The Canon may be slightly better in low light.

Also if you buy the Tamron from Adorama you could trade in the Canon. B&H and others would probably do the same.

Be aware that Canon TCs do not work with the Tamron 150-600 G2. If you want a TC with the Tamron, you will need to buy a Tamron brand TC.

I have pondered the same question. I goggled and read and then read some more. I came to the conclusion that, why stop at 400 mm. I was looking to extend my reach. So 600 mm. I then read everything on the net [ I strongly suggest you do the same ] between the Tamron and the Sigma 150-600 mm lenses. From everything I read the Sigma 150-600 C was the clear winner. Me, I found a 2x ii for 150 on craigslist. It works great with my 1ds 3 and my 300 mm prime.

Use your Canon 100-400 with a Canon 1.4x III, you will have almost the same range at 560mm.

IMO, in order to make an intelligent recommendation for you, I need to know which BODY you are using ??. In general tho, I am in favor of keeping your Canon 100-400 and if you are using a high MP crop frame body, maximize your image quality and CROP your way (1.5X) to 600mm and use well applied pixel enlargement software for larger printings. You will have much better AF with your Canon lens ! - and lower light capabilities also.

Getting the Tamron only makes sense if you are using a lower MP full frame body.
