Saw this article this morning and find it fascinating that Nikon made a big deal when the D850 first came out that the sensor was developed ‘in house’. Now we find, once again, that it’s a Sony sensor. Guess I’m not surprised…… Sony IS at the top of their game when it comes to sensors.

Many OEM parts in many products are designed in house and built by a lower cost supplier.

The other way around. Sony developed and built the sensor and Nikon contracted to buy it from Sony. They have had a long relationship this way. Sony is the world leader in imaging sensors, so it stands to reason.

Hmmm, well, it pays to read to the end of the article (which I had not until now). Seems as though it IS a Sony designed and manufactured sensor, BUT with some additional input from Nikon to allow the native ISO to be 64 which Sony has never had it any of it's own cameras. Interesting that Sony says this proprietary additional design from Nikon won't be incorporated into it's own camera sensors.....

Sony native ISO of 100 is perfectly fine in my A7RIII and A7III. There is more market-driven emphasis on greater low light/high ISO sensitivity and sensor performance, than a need to shoot at ISO 64. The next generation of stacked-sensors from Sony (in the upcoming A7SIII ) may be more advanced than anything they sell to Nikon.

The sensor in the D850 is a NIKON Designed and Sony manufactured to NIKONS Specs ..this is confirmed and not disputed by those in the know ...

Sony is the leader in sensors world wide including the Pentax 645Z and the Hasselblad X1D -50c ,, which are medium format..

Sony has admitted that the NIKON Designed sensor is matched one on one by Sony’s best..the D850 features the BSI and dual gain designs that allow the D850 to have a 64 ISO .., while Sony’s still limited to ISO 100 .

That’s the big difference between a Sony sensor made for external clients and a D850 NIKON Design given to The Sony semiconductor Div made from NIKONS designers and produced to the NIKON exact specs ..

So .., The D850 does not just use a borrowed Sony sensor and call it its own .. the sensor achieves 64 ISO Because of NIKONS design of the sensor .. a 100 % Sony sensor can only achieve 100 ISO ..

If I interpret it right Sony developed the BSI sensor https://www.consumerreports.org/cro/news/2011/04/bsi-image-sensor-technology-set-to-change-how-cameras-capture/index.htm first any contribution to the design (if so) would be second to Nikon on the D850. But does it make for a hill of beans, I don't think so. I own both the D810 and D850 and both do a great job with the two different sensors for portrait and landscape.

Nikon developed the sensor. open up any computerized gadget and you will see parts from Samsung, Toshiba etc.

Did you read the article? I clearly states it's a Sony design with added Nikon intellectual property permitting a 64 native ISO. Does that make it a Nikon developed sensor? Partially at best. Does it really matter? No, except that Nikon originally made no reference to the fact they were using a Sony sensor....
