Post-production is important, to be sure, but there are things that if you don't get it right in the camera, you can't fix it in post. You blow something out, you're going to have to work to get something to fill it. If your focus is off, you can't fix that. It's ALWAYS better to get the best image in the camera.

Yes art is subjective. You have described some of the details of that.

Yes, art is subjective... but are there no criteria at all for what constitutes "art"? Is "Elvis on Velvet" art simply because some people like it? Does a "paint by numbers" painting qualify as a work of art?

I think sometimes we lump craftsmanship together with art. To me they are not the same. Some works can show superb craftsmanship but there has to be some originality for it to qualify as art.

Well, my artwork can be called whatever suits one's thoughts and opinions. I don't mind what anyone calls it as long as I continue to get paid for it 6 days a week... and I do sell some pictures made with my cameras as well as my paint and brushes too, so I'm happy and best of all, I enjoy it.

Oddly enough, there are some people out there who can make it look exactly like Elvis, no matter what they use for a canvas....and some who couldn't if they tried.

Sorry to say it this way, but my neighbor's husband calls what she does "Arts & Craps"...so can it be both?

No. That seems very disparaging of the husband toward his wife's work.

To validate my point, go to at any quality photo site and look at the very best images. They did not come straight out of the camera.

It depends on what qualities you are referring to when you say "the very best images".

If what they all have in common you think that's the best, then yes. Others may not share that particular view of those qualities, I know I don't. I think content is king and other things take a back seat.

Perhaps it's time to TAKE PICTURES!

It's interesting that so many threads become “vocabulary lessons” and philosophy classes”. So many photographers are wrestling with the age old question “is photography an art?” and consequently, “am I an artist?” - or a crafts person, or a technician, or a scientist or a camera operator and God forbid, am I a snap-shooter?!

As kid in 1955, I received a birthday gift along with a pretty cool box camera kit- a subscription to Popular Photography Magazine. The cover story was “Is Photography Really an Art”. That question is so old that it is growing hair- like me, an old man with a gray beard! I remember the consensuses of the writers in that issue was “YES”!- providing the camera is in the hands of and is guided by the heart and eye of an ARTIST! Now that's a decent enough answer but now we have to consult the Oxford Dictionary of the English Language to define the word “Artist”! I have a cat that likes to chase his own tail- same thing!

So...I take pictures just about every day- it's my job! Many of the assignments I do are pretty mundane as to subject matter and oftentimes the work is rather routine. Sometimes it is indeed challenging and exciting. Today's job is a catalog of surgical instruments- not too artsy! Every since 1955, I wanted to become an artist with a camera. All I can do to remain enthusiastic about my work, earn a living and maintain my sanity is try to do each job in the most creative and artful way that I can.

I was fortunate enough to have a good deal of formal education in photography and experience great on-the-job- training by good mentors and taskmasters. I read the books and attended exhibitions and was inspired by the great iconic photographers. I still study, attend workshops, read books and seek inspiration but mainly, I take pictures. Even when I am “off duty”, I shoot stuff- sometimes just with my cellphone camera. I try not to take myself too seriously!

My grandmother told a story about being awakened in the middle of the night by the sound of a crying baby in the next apartment where my aunt and uncles lived with my newborn cousin. She entered the apartment to see what was the matter and there they were, the baby was screaming at the top of her lungs while the new parents were feverishly scanning the pages of their Dr. Spock baby and child care book. My grandmother gently instructed- “Put down the book and pick up the baby”! Problem solved! Maybe it's time to PICK UP THE CAMERA! Then feed the results into you computer- work the images and see what comes out the other end! It's fun and educational!

It can only enhance GOOD photos. PP cannot compensate for humdrum subjects, flat lighting, and uninteresting shooting angle.

Yep - composition, lighting and subject matter, and any camera can create a strong image. PP can then be used to bring the SOOC image more in line with the vision the photog had when the image was captured. Why is this such a controversy?

Well said, E.L.; but, but can't we do both? Enjoy the crafty art of photography AND talk about it?

I think there is an art to EVERYTHING...e.g. hairdressers...some are artists at it, some not so much...artists, some great, some not so much, swimmers/divers, gourmet chefs...and photography. Behind every camera is an artist...or not so much. As an artist, I figure I fit somewhere in the middle. I sell artwork 6 days a week, but I strive to get better every day. If I paint something and it doesn't quite please me, I try to enhance it a little. With a camera, I figure I fit somewhere in the middle too, but there also, I strive to get better every day. I enhance my pictures often and LOVE to play with PP. I am def one of those who doesn't know what I'd do without an editing program.
