Question about moving photos to external HD

I have too many photos stored on my iMac hard drive. So, I bought a WD 8TB external HD. My goal is to move those existing photos to the new drive and initially store new photos on the external drive in the future. (I am satisfied with the backup system I have in place so that is not part of this topic.)

Taking baby steps, after setting the HD up to work with my iMac and adding a Photos folder to the new HD, I picked out a dozen pictures and videos in the Photos app on my iMac and "exported" them to the new external drive. Then I went to look at them on the external drive and was surprised to have Mocha AE software open up. From the Mocha AE web site, I understand that it is used to deal with videos. I ended up using "force quit" to get it to close.

When I select a video in Photos on the iMac and then click on the arrow on the video, the video launches immediately. I don't really want to have to learn how to use Mocha AE in order to watch videos on the WD external drive.

Questions:

1. Is there a way I can add videos to the external drive and view them without using Mocha AE?
2. What steps would you use to move all pictures and videos in the Photos app on the iMac to the 8TB Western Digital external drive?

Thanks,

Rich

1 - don't know

2- don't use the program! use the computer's operating system to move the photo & video files from the computer's HD to the external HD.

that's my WAG

good luck

You did buy two drives I hope. One for your active storage and one for backup.

I think Tim Grey addressed the issue also the Lightroom queen. If you live near an Apple store they’ll help you. Also call Apple. Can’t you drag and drop in the finder from one folder to another. Just make sure everything is backed up before playing with anything.

Try right clicking on the file; "open with"; choose the app you want to use

FWIW, I just moved photos from my pc external to my WD for Mac external by dragging and dropping from the Finder. I could just move the whole folder

Just copy your photos from the iMac to the external drive. When you are absolutely sure all the photos are copied than you can start deleting the photos on the iMac if you choose too.

To avoid getting the Mocha AE launching against your wishes, format the hard drive first. You'll find what is necessary in Utilities on your iMac. Now you'll have a clean drive with only a small section of the drive used to let it run compatibly with your Mac. After that, drag and drop is your friend.
I just did that 2 weeks ago but I used a 4 Gig drive.

I would want to have the images backed up in the cloud before taking on that process. Carbonite!

1) No idea what that program is.
2) The best way is to copy and then paste to a folder you made on the drive to put the photos in. Very easy and reliable and no mess up. Once it is on the external drive, and you confirm it is there you can erase them from your computer if you desire. You might want to get a second external as a back up though and most people recommend that.

I have 2t of photos on plug in hard drive, I just dragged the file onto the drive. I have another 1t on the mac drive. I manage the files using the mac operating system using places as the indexing of where photos are filed. I use Canon DPP for raw conversion, and Topaz Studio on occasion , both file & drive are shown in the sidebar.
