Do you need the 'vr on when using a manual flash sb26 flash? Thanks Jim Bianco

If the flash is the only light source or is much brighter than ambient light, then VR should be unnecessary since the short duration of the flash should prevent camera motion. But if you are using it along with ambient light, and the shutter speed is slow, then it will help prevent motion.

The only time I turn off VR is when the camera/lens is on a tripod, otherwise VR stays on. Even on a monopod, I leave the VR on. Works for me.

VR does use up more battery power, so I don't use it if I can use a high enough shutter speed that it isn't necessary.

Agreed, but I never noticed that much difference. I do use a battery pack and carry a spare. Also noted that using back button and continuous focus eats a battery up a little quicker too. On my 3 day shoots (7,000+ shots) I only usually run down one of the 2 batteries in the D500 and have about 25% left in the second one. I have to keep my eye on memory more than battery.
