I thought the Nikon Df was/is overpriced; but I still bought one.

I thought it was priced just right. My guess long several years before Nikon introduced the Df when someone wished for a "Digital FM" I said that the price would be about $3000. I wasn't off by much. That person would be buying the Df.

To be clear, I have no regrets about the purchase. I am 'that person".

$1,200 for a 1" sensor does sound like a bit much.
Keep in mind that you are also paying for a very capable and very small computer, which is the same or more than in many cameras with larger sensors.

Right about Sony. Their prices do seem a bit on the high side, especially the substantial jumps each new RX100 takes. Other camera companies charge just about the same for upgraded models, but not Sony. Makes you wonder exactly what you are paying for in the new model.

My opinion: Most people only use their cameras in good light conditions. Therefore, they don't need high ISO performance. Therefore, any camera system priced higher than the Sony RX100M6 is overpriced and massively overweight, as well as terribly inconvenient to carry.
Camera systems are just like divorce, people are willing to pay high prices because it's worth it.
If you look at Sony's other businesses many of them are ones that have rapid product turnover. Maybe that has just carried over into the Camera business too...

The interesting thing about Sony is the way they produced updated versions so often. That's one of the things that differentiate them from companies like Canon and Nikon. Sony rushes their products to market and as a result, quality suffers. I'm not saying Sony doesn't make quality products, they do, but their products seem to get upgraded far more often than other manufacturers, and unlike Canon, they tend to buy a good bit of technology as opposed to in-house development, which is also not a bad thing. It's like the old wine commercials that advertised, we will sell no wine before its time; and the old definition of a Viking, someone who will drink any wine before its time.
Anyway, Sony is into quicker turn over, from design rooms to consumers whereas Canon puts more time and effort into research and development and manufacturing making their products less likely to have problems.
Here's an interesting example; a whole lot of people diss Canon for not embracing 4K as others, like Sony, have. Canon has been slow to roll out 4K products, mainly because they determined the majority of people who buy dedicated cameras don't really need 4K. Many folks want it but don't really need it and many, many of them only have 2K viewing devices.
While Canon has begun to do more with 4K, they are currently leading the development of 8K, which is knock your socks off amazing but won't be hitting the streets for a couple few years.
The interesting thing about Sony is the way they p... (

No one forces anyone to buy a camera upgrade. If the upgrade doesn't provide something you value highly enough, you shouldn't upgrade.
My candidate is the Leica M10 for $7300!
What no Leica fans out there?
My M 240 is overpriced but a Joy to use ;-)
Over priced is a relative term.
IMO Good design is worth paying for no matter what the category......if its something you want and choose to afford.
Are they overpriced or are most people just underfunded...
A while back I was talking about spending $600 for some camera gear and my drag racing son's comment was that there was nothing for a race car for $600. I am actually amazed by how much money and wealth is out there floating around in the world. It comes down to what people like to do and value for some of these better off people.
I have often found that the most overpriced camera is the one you want but can't afford!

Sony has an interesting History in the RX100 series. I cannot remember a series of such camera's that are still being sold new, B&H is still selling the RX100 II, III, IV, and V. Simply amazing that this series continues to sell well. Speaks well for the build and reputation of this series.
That said the new RX100VI is currently selling for about $1200. The RX100V sold for about $1000.00 when it first came out. So, a 20% increase in price for the new RX100 VI. Not that much more for a NEW product. If you look at Nikon and others who have come out with selected new items, they have charged a greater % on some new products.
Look, Sony has always charged top dollar for the RX100 series since it's introduction. It is not for the folks who are on a budget, let's be honest here, there are those of us on this site who feel the price in NOT out of line, and they will buy it.
So, my advice, if you can't afford the RX100 VI, wait and buy the used RX100 V's that are going to be offered soon as those folks who want the VI will be selling the V to get one.
Bottom line, I believe that are many, many, other brands that are more overpriced camera's for 2018 than the Sony RX100 VI.

ALL Sony cameras are over priced for what you get.
