California Blue Oak and mistletoe

I took this shot with Sony RX1R.

Minimal PP.

I walk this road, French Bar Road, often,€” and oak trees are everywhere... this tree stands out though, in terms of it’€™s size. It is massive.

The very sad thing is the mistletoe clumping on it’€™s branches. Mistletoe is a parasitic plant and will eventually kill this tree. California has been in a drought for years and likely has weakened this old tree’€™s immune system.

I felt the least I could do was take a photo—€” in a few years this majestic tree will succumb to the mistletoe.

A gorgeous image of this oak, I especially like the monochrome treatment and the cattle grazing nearby. I new mistletoe was parasitic, but never realized it would eventually kill the oak tree.

The mistletoe will suck the nutrients from the tree out by the leaves thereby reducing the quality of leaves which are required to sustain the tree

One doesn’t realize the magnitude of this massive tree until it’s compared to the seemingly ant-sized cow.

Very nice capture, and sad that it will eventually be gone.

Thank you—so much...!

I, myself, didn’t even realize this was mistletoe until I did my research. I mistakenly thought mistle toe was just a harmless plant hung up a Christmas Time... little did I know—

Yes— the minuscule cow puts everything in scale... I’m glad she was there! :)
