Something that's been bugging me is a curious thought. Do helicopters have throttles like airplanes or are they just always full throttle?

They have a throttle and collective control. The pilot uses both to vary lift and speed.

It would be a rough landing at full throttle.

Helio-choppers do have throttles; they are called "Throttles". However, they also have additional controls on a device called a "Collective" which also has a control for blade 'Pitch'; blade (rotor) speed is fairly constant. The throttle controls only the Power the engine puts out. I am a 'Fixed Wing' pilot and when I tried flying a helicopter on MS 'Flight Simulator', I crashed so many times, I finally gave up. IF IT AIN'T GOT A WING, I DON'T WANT NUTTIN' TO DO WIF IT!

starlifter br Helio-choppers do have throttles... (show quote)

But....choppers do have wings. They just rotate!

I didn't to stupid asking the throttle question. I know the other controls for adjusting their speed and direction.

Yeah well they me called blades but they do have an airfoil which makes em wing blades

What I remember most about helicopters is that the piolets were either crazy men or wild men depending on the circumstances but more importantly they were Heroes to many. No matter what you had to love them.

Depends, piston engines or turbines....Turbine's are controlled by the collective once the rpm (power) has been set, as you increase pitch, the auto throttle control increases power. With many piston engines, there's a throttle like a motorcycle on the collective to manage rpm...roll on the throttle as you increase pitch, roll off as you decrease pitch

...and another axiom about Helicopters; They really don't fly, the earth just rejects them
