Andy,

I was having a lot of fun with my granddaughters at that age with a video game setup in my office/den/studio. One day they thought it would be fun to make videos. I bought the gear and we went to work. At the time I had abandon "serious" photography as a revolt against the switch to digital. They planted a seed that re-lit my interest. They are now in the high school years. They've done well. One is shooting a Nikon and the other has sold paintings. Both are very good phone shooters. One has a huge group following her photography on Instagram.

Enjoy working with them and seeing how fast they can learn!

Thanks Bill,

Grands are a joy to us. as I'm sure you know. I was too late to get into video, but it seems likely that some of my grands will be showing me how it's done.

Most kids view on phones, get some of their pictures printed. This will give them a different look and feel of their photos.

A terrific idea (wish Ida thought of it). Another idea. Get the kids to take pics of things they would usually ignore. A leaf on the ground, an apple in a bowl. Almost anything can make a good picture. That kind of thing can get kids to "see" things thay they didn't see before.

She’s Michelle, not Ida! Lol 😂

And you’re exactly right. When they see what Grammy is shooting, they take a look themselves.

Awesome idea! The kids will have great memories and learn something along the way. Not to mention getting them away from the tv and video games. Photography, road trips, the great outdoors and ice cream. Nothing better than that!

They’re “Littles” for such a brief time. ❤️

My wife, co-conspirator in photography, and best friend, a/k/a "Grammy" has been taking care of our 9 and 11 year old grands in Virginia, and came up with a fun idea that they are really enjoying.

She has taken them on a couple of "photo safaris" this week, which is basically her normal recreational pursuit of driving around country roads and stopping to shoot whatever appeals to her. The littles get to tell her where to turn (something my dad used to do with us on Sunday drives), and everyone gets to say "I see something!" when they see a place, view, animal, or object that they want to shoot. Grammy pulls over safely, and they all get out and try to take pictures - Grammy on her DSLR and the littles on their phones. They get back in the car and keep rambling, turning where each kid suggests in turn, and stopping for treats like an ice cream cone or some fine Dollar Store shopping. When they come to a place where they can walkabout, they stretch their legs and shoot some more. When they get home, Grammy uploads everything onto her tablet, and they sit on the couch together deciding which ones they want to enhance. She then sends them to Papa Andy, so he can see where they've been on safari. It's more fun when they call it a safari.

It's kept a couple of energetic kids occupied and entertained for several hours so far in their first week off from school (You don't overdo anything with littles, I've long ago learned), and they're very proud of their work. They're also learning a bit to "see" and to compose, crop, color, etc. Most kids these days have phones with decent cameras and some editing capacity, so they can join right in. And Grammy still gets to go on her photographic rambles.

It's better than teaching them how to take duck face selfies!

That’s awesome! My mother used to take me to Georgetown, the zoo, Old Rag Mountain, and Skyline drive. She would hand her Minolta to me (which later became my first camera), and we would play iSpy using black and white film. It was so much fun and got me started on a lifetime of photography!

The idea of Safari is awesome, educational, and will leave such a great set of memories for them when they grow up! Love that!

I started doing "photo walks" with my five year old grandson this past school year. He loved it and I was amazed at what a good job he did and was often surprised at his subject choices. I loaned him my Canon G15- a bit expensive but at least he didn't have the frustration of a slower, lesser camera. I shortened the camera strap for him so he could carry it comfortably around his neck with little fear of dropping it.
A safari would be a great next step for us. Wonderful idea.

Glad you liked Grammy's safaris. And Photo Walks is also great - you can do it right in the back yard!

The interesting thing is that young kids (at least ours...) start "taking pictures" as soon as they get their first cell phone. And that age is getting younger and younger.

They are all quite aware of the concept of "Art" - from kindergarten onward, all of our kids and grands have always provided a constant stream of drawings, paintings, and sculptures for Mom/Dad and Grammy/Papa.

Putting the two together by encouraging them to make "art" images to be shared with others was Grammy's little stroke of genius, in my entirely unbiased opinion. The idea that the phones they had in their pockets were tools to make art seemed new, and now they're also interested in what Grammy uses to make such pretty pictures.

They're only young once!

Andy
