Besides from my AI, AIs lenses, I cannot find the SN on my 85mm f/1.8D AF, 105mm Micro AF f/2.8D and many other film area AF lenses. Help, thanks

According to Ken Rockwell, the numbers are "Laser engraved onto bottom rear of aperture ring."

The old timers used to file the serial numbers off so Nikon could not claim they were "Grey Market" and refuse to service them. Just joking!

Yes, that is where it is. I have several of these AF Nikkor D type lenses including the 85mm f/1.8 and the serial number is there
but very small and hard to see. chase

Yes it is there, very fine engrave. I have to use my loup (the one we used to inspect slide films in the old time) . W/o the tip, well who would think of that?
Thanks

They are imprinted into the lens barrel. They are sometimes very hard to see. BUT, they are there.

...a flashlight will help “light up” the laser engraved serial numbers on the back side of the aperture ring...

Also, once you find and can read the serial number, you can visit this site to discover approximately when your lens was produced, where it was produced and how many were produced: http://www.photosynthesis.co.nz/nikon/lenses.html

I just checked a 105 micro 'd'

It is on the aperture ring about 180 degrees from the 2.8 marking.
