The first for me too as it has much more clarity etc. The grass in the first has good focus whereas in the second it doesn't.

It's #1 for me. The image looks much sharper and the grass more natural.. Nice shot of the coon!

Not sure. I really like the shot but there's something about each that captures my attention. Sorry to be so indecisive. I guess I'm of the opinion that natural is best. I don't know GIMP so I have trouble offering an informed comparison Ken.

Save the soft focus effect for portraits of the ladies and your kitties. The first image is my favorite - good detail in the fur and the catch lights in the eyes are more pronounced.
