Just a few shots with my new camera. I am trying to practice as i want to really get into macro photography. Critiques are always welcome. I have trouble with composition.
Thanks Hogs
Your composition's fine.....so is that Sony a6000. I love mine. If you find a macro lens that works with it please let me know.
look at legacy glass. i have about 6 legacy lenses for a total cost of under $200 with adapters. so if you have a macro lens you like just get the adapter for it.....
I have a Tamron macro 90mm 2.5 that used to fit on my old Canon AE-1 in the 80's. with a 20 dollar adapter I now have a 50mm 1.8 FD, Soligor 28-200 3.8 and the Tamron of course.
I love the composition of the great blue heron - naturally framed in a very attractive setting.
Your photo of the white egret may have been one of those instant opportunities with no time to prepare. If you do have time to anticipate, dial in some negative exposure compensation so you can get details in your subject, rather than just featureless white.
With your flower you may want to try darkening a bit, or working with the mid-tones (if you're doing pp) to make the colors a little richer. It appears that the leaf in upper right corner is where you focused. Love the square framing; many people don't think of that with single blooms.

I think the compositions are great!! Really nice pictures.
I got the Sony FE 90mm f/2.8 Macro G OSS for my A6000. It is a great lens, but it is very heavy for the A6000's plastic body. On a tripod it would cause the camera bottom to flex and sag by half a frame. I was afraid it would snap off. I modified a Canon lens mount ring which helped. but still wasn't very secure.
I'd suggest trying the Sony 50mm F2.8 Macro first.
Thank you for that criticism. I need to hear stuff like this to make me better. I will apply a bunch of the things that you have said. Again thanks so much
The heron is really a nice composition but, as noted, the egret needs less exposure and I’m not fond of the framing. I just purchased an a6000 with the kit 16-50 lens and am still trying to learn the menus.
"Linda from Maine" is spot-on that the Great Blue Heron is a "real winner". If it were mine, it would be hanging on my wall.
I have found Linda to be highly talented with a wealth of experience. She has shared recommendation on some of my posts in the past and I value her advice highly. I have found several UHH regulars to be good mentors to those who seek constant improvement.

Nice series. If you are shooting RAW images, shoot them at least one stop underexposed, especially if there are white subjects. The white cannot be retrieved once it is blown out and you lose the detail. If you shoot in RAW, you can lighten the shadow areas while retaining those textures in the highlights. If you are shooting in JPG, you have less chances for a save. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks to everyone for their critiques as I am still learning and I pay attention to the experts.
Thanks again folks.
