My 'Kit' as you refer to it ( backpack design), with two DSLR professional camera bodies (both Fuji S5 Pros), five pro lenses (all Tamron SPs from17-35mm f2.8 to 70-210mm f2.8), one extended battery base (a Nikon MB-D200 has 2 batts), two flash units (a Nikon SB-800 plus a brand new 'Monster' -and VERY heavy- Interfit Strobies 360 with 360 ws of power*) weighs probably around 50 pounds and gets really heavy after a 4-5 hour wedding. Much of that weight is from that Strobies flash, but my Nikon (my OVER PRICED) Nikon, just doesn't have the power to shoot a large wedding party from 20 feet- out doors- at night! I can do exactly that, with the 'Strobies', at only 'quarter power' . And it was ONLY $350 at B&H. I think a New Nikon SB900 is close to $600; Ridiculous!
But, you were right about the 'Old Timers'. Ansel wasn't just some dummy that just loved the 'exercise' of wagging that 11X14 plus gear all over Yosemite! If he had had a Hassy (not sure of the model) with 50 Mp . . . that also cost $50,000, I'm sure he would have used it (at least I think he would have).
