I suggest you check with their website, they have a wealth of info there. If you have some specific questions, I bet some of us have the answers. I'm not an in-depth user, but I have enjoyed the couple of years that I've had my Hero5....IMO, the best buy of the whole line...

In my eyes not a bad little video camera that's goes just about anywhere. I played with my nephew's for about a week, but as yet have not purchased one for myself. Although it does also take stills, it is primarily set up for video use and I was disappointed to find out that the one I played with had almost no manual controls or settings. I couldn't find any menu function to control the f-stops and depth of field, but if I remember correctly you could adjust the shutter speed and ISO to some degree, but nothing like the manual controls we are generally used to using. In any case, I would consider it to primarily be an auto exposure camera, but if your looking for small and rugged, it simply can't be beat. Frankly, it does a nice job for what it is and it certainly has it's niche, especially with the younger/active outdoors crowd! Overall, an interesting, but perhaps a bit pricey toy (maybe "gadget" is a more appropriate word here), but still hours of fun with surprising end results.

In 2014 I had a GoPro Silver and used it in the Galapagos Islands. Worked very well under water with the housing that was included. Now their cameras don't need a housing for water that is 30 feet deep. They still make an enclosure for those that go deeper than 30 feet. That's a nice improvement. GoPro has a sale now on the GoPro Hero 5 Black for $250 that includes a 32GB card, and an extra battery. I sold my Silver after my Galapagos trip and I'm thinking of buying the Hero 5 Black from GoPro direct now. I would used it in my Jeep when I go off-roading. I use a knock off GoPro now and I'm not all that happy with it.

I have a GoPro Hero5...and a warped 'sense of humor' as well. When I am showing it to other people, I try to do it when we are at a restaurant having lunch or just coffee, etc. I make sure that I have a glass of water in front of me....and after I explain a few of the features of the GoPro, I will then say something like, "Here, you have a look!"..and proceed to pass the camera across the table to the other person. At that point I "fumble...WHOOOPS..!" and drop the GoPro into the water......ALWAYS a major surprise to the rest of the table. I try to remember to have it taking video when I pull this stunt, so that the entire episode is recorded for our 'enjoyment'....!!

It's after I retrieve it from the water glass that I explain that it IS waterproof....

Har, har…..I'll be here all week, tip your waiter...!

The only problem I had with the GoPro was that their instructions are in light print and WAY too small for old people to read.

I had a like problem with a manual which was not available anywhere on line. It was one of those fold up ones about two feet long by maybe three inches high. I scanned it into my computer, blew it up and took screen shots of each page and then printed them. I may be old and need bifocals but, there are ways.

Great little video cameras, quirky, expendable. I use mine as a second camera for odd viewpoints. It became much more usable with the app for my phone, it gave me a viewfinder and remote start. The production company I sometimes work for uses GoPro on their drone. They are fun.

Here are two options that might help out....the first is from the GoPro.com site itself. They have product manuals for ALL of their cameras, etc. Here is a link that will get a download in PDF format for the Hero5. Since that is what I have, I picked that one...but there is a good menu for the other models. Being a pdf, you can easily zoom into any of the sections you want to read more about. It also allows you to do most of the PDF functions, print, search, save...etc. You are correct to point out that much of the material that comes with so many devices requires 20/20 vision AND magnifying glasses to read easily... Even worse are some devices that print the labels on the actual controls in something like light gray on dark gray.....impossible to read..!

The second option is to buy one of the many manuals that have been written for GoPros….these are available either as hard copy books or as downloaded manuals to your PC, Kindle, Nook, etc. The one that I purchased from Amazon is written by Jordan Hetrick and contains a wealth of info, both about the camera itself as well as post processing, selecting good photo locations...on and on. The link is: https://smile.amazon.com/GoPro-How-Use-Hero-Black/dp/0991654773/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1527464786&sr=8-1&keywords=gopro+hero+5+manual&dpID=515qrF1882L&preST=_SX218_BO1,204,203,200_QL40_&dpSrc=srch I'm sure there are others that are good, but this is the only one I have any knowledge of.

Keep in mind that the current GoPro models are VERY 'feature intensive' with a VERY extensive list of options that can be selected, modified or deleted. To pack all of this into a 2 inch cube, along with an LED screen, microphones (3 of them!), a tiny speaker, voice controls, remote control link, ....the list goes on and on. Don't try to 'get it all' at one time...play with each of the functions until you have a good grasp of how they work...then move on to the next one. Enjoy your amazing camera....it's truly a high quality device, capable of some amazing photos, videos, time lapse, slo-mo, etc...

I have had a multitude of film, digital and video cameras over my extensive photography life (60 years). Never been more frustrated than trying to use the GoPro. Menu system is terrible, software is absolutely awful. Look at some other vendors.
