Did you try a Google search for a tutorial - that is how I learned to do layers in PS7?
Good luck - when you learn to do layers you will have lots of fun with them.

Yes, start a new topic. This is hidden in a request for help with an editing program.

A long time ago I learned that there are no stupid questions - what is obviouse to the trained & educated is not so to the newcomer or novice.
Kind of like - I was blind & now I see -

How pathetic. I saw this topic tittle and thought well this will be good, I could use some tips - - NOT.
Just some 'google it', with no good links provided.
Truth be known most all requests for information would be better served by 'googling'. Better, more detailed and in depth, less opinionated. BUT that is not what attracts people (me) to this forum.

obviouse - - - trained & educated. Huh?

Come on you guys you can do better than that/this.

Corel has some webinars on X4 that can be run any time. I know there is one on layers. Check it out.

My reply was the best I could do as I have only used PS never any other programs.
After doing a search & finding a tutorial - this was before the vidio tutorials of present- I would down load & prnt them out - then clip then to the side of my monitor for easy reading -then with my PS book open to the subject -layers in this case - I would work thru the tutorial 'till such time as I could master the new task.
Later I would punch and save then I a 3 ring binder for future referance.

What is you sage advice instead of critisizing others?

Yes - a document holder is what I used - monitor & document at the same level realy helps. Then Number it and enter the number on an index page in the binder.

I'll try to put some meat on it. For PSP, open the program, hit "Help" and chose "Working with Layers" You should be directed to:

http://product.corel.com/help/PhotoPro/540226262/807001/EN/Doc/wwhelp/wwhimpl/js/html/wwhelp.htm?context=Corel_PaintShop_Pro_X4_Help&topic=0x2007F&single=

Much detail in this area which explains how layers work in PSP

Layers in PSP work very much like those in Photoshop. You really should devote a day to playing with it - it will improve your processing more than you can imagine.

Learn how to use Masks - basically, you create a layer, make changes (almost any kind of change) then mask it. Using a white or black paint brush on the mask will reveal or hide any portion of the changed layer, allowing you to apply changes to only a selected portion of the photo.

Make sure the layer pallet is visible on the right side of the screen (View/ Pallet / Layers or just hit F8) Very helpful types of layers (which you select in the box just above the layer palet)are "Normal" for most adjustments, "Screen" to brighten a photo or "Multiply" to darken. For Screen or Multiply, adjust the percentage of visibility (just above the displayed layers - which defaults to "100" percent)until you get the results you want.

In the bottom right of the screen, you will see a folded page to make a new layer and a symbol for a mask to make a mask layer. Don't worry about "adjustment layers" until you get your feet wet. When you adjust a mask, using a white or black paintbrush, you can see the areas you have adjusted by hitting the red mask above the layer pallet on the right side. Masked portions show up as red, unmasked are clear

Once you get the hang of it, you will never make any significant adjustmets to a photo any other way.
