Lately in Southern Ca. in my backyard I have a pair of very large birds at the feeder. They look like Doves but are about twice the size of the other Doves that visit. The wife thinks they are Pidgeons, can anyone help?

Looks like a collared dove to me. Definitely not a pigeon.

While it looks like the collared dove it is about twice the size and it's tail feathers are different.
Thanks.

It looks like a ringed turtle dove - it is not native but often carried in pet stores and often escapes. It is almost a perfect match.

Went to Audubon Society, looks like I have a pair of Ring Tailed Pigeons. I guess they taste good because there is a brief hunting season for them. Their numbers were decreasing but the Hunting season and bag limits have helped increase their numbers.

They are Mourning Doves.

Sorry - mourning doves do not have that black stripe on the back of their necks.

Ring Tailed Pigeons have a white stripe on their neck - not a black one.

It is a Eurasian Collared Dove, first in US 1981 (Florida & Georgia) from birds brought over for someone's garden in the Bahamas. They are now everywhere. First recorded sighting in California in 2001. The African Collared Dove looks similar but is light beige/white and only in a few places (LA Metro area is one.) due to escaped pets. The African ones are sometimes called Ringed Turtle-Doves.

You want big, wait until a Band Tailed Pigeon comes to your yard, they are the size of a crow.

This bird is as big as a Crow.

I'm with you - can't tell between Eurasian or Ringed Turtle due to lack of contrast in the photo but both are larger than most doves and both have these markings.

The Collared Doves (both kinds) are about twice the bulk of a Mourning Dove, the Band Tailed Pigeon is about twice that bulk. The size of a large crow or a small Raven.
I have pictures of all three types of doves and the Band Tailed in my yard. Well Raven also.
I live in Corona in Riverside County.
