Depending on how steady you are, what the light level is and some other variables I would guess that anything over about a 200mm lens is going to be a stuggle for most. Yes there are exceptaions and various belts and so forth to help you steady the bigger ones. You may want to rent a couple of different ones to try.

I use a Nikon 70-200mm f-2.8 VR lens and have used a 2X or 1.4X Teleconverter with it. With the 2X Teleconverter you must stop down to f-8 or higher to get reasonable sharp photos. I know some people who use a Sigma 50-500mm and get very good results. If you click on the below link, you can view some photos of Tigers I took with my 70-200mm lens and a 1.4X Teleconverter. The advice above is great. If you dont have the big bucks I would look on eBay for the Nikon 70-210 f/4 lenes. It is just a stop slower than f/2.8 The one I got on eBay was
$180. For me that was much better than the thousand plus for the faster F2.8 lenes. I have used it with a 2x converter and it worked well for me. I do have a d80 that I use it on. Since I use it only a few times a year for wildlife it is great for me. If wildlife is your thing I would go for mor expensive leses. - Dave

handheld is the key..I love the 70-300vr..wow..great sharp images..needs light ..but who going out in the dark to shoot wildlife..not me. I also have a tamron 200-500..needs a tripod..so thats out for you. I have a freind with a 120-400 sigma..she gets really nice shots with it..has image stablizaton..for around $1000...but its big and heavy...probably needs a monopod to take weight off.

I also have the Nikon 70-300 and love it. Takes some really sharp photos handheld. I shoot birds, and other wildlife with it. Had it approx 2 yrs now and its given me some fantastic pics. Affordable to.
