Off Camera flash on the 7D

I need to know if the Canon 7D can operate the 430 EX ll Flash off camera without another flash, IE 580 EX ll or other Master flash, wirelessly or with the PC port? I just ordered the 430 EX ll flash with the intention of using it off camera when I read that you have to have a "Master flash" and the 430 EX ll can only be a slave. But, I swear I read somewhere when I purchased the 7D that it, the 7D, can be used as the Master and there was no need for 580 Master flash. Is there anyone out there with experience with this kind of set up?

Yes you can. I have both the 7d and 430 ex2 and use it off camera all the time. Th 7d can control 3 different groups of flashes. The flash on th 7d triggers the off camera. Setup is not hard but you need to read the instructions.

I think it works like this, just use the flash on your 7D
as normal.
but the remote flash must be set on slave.

it should fire when the camera fires.

"clear as mud."

As stated above it works but you must use the pop up flash on the 7D. When used in this configuration, don't worry about the pop up flash adding fill or key light on the subject. The camera dials back the pop up power to almost nothing so the the light from the pop up triggers the 430EXII. Clear as mud :)

I also have wondered if the 430ex had to be a slave. Thanks ;-)

Yes. Set it as slave. The 7d controls it.

I have composed a short paper on this very topic. It is available as a PDF from my Dropbox.
