Which Nikon lens to buy ?

My college age daughter has a Nikon D7100. She'd like to buy an inexpensive ( < 1K ) used lens lens to shoot some college soccer games. I know there are many models of the Nikon 70-300mm lens made and she thinks that's what she'd like to have, but I have no clue which one would be best for her to look for.

Any suggestions ?

Thanks.

The newest version (Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6E VR AF-P FX) is listed as compatible with the D7100, although she may need to download and install a firmware update to the camera. Alternatively, consider the "G" version from Nikon. Check pricing on EX or EX+ rated used models at KEH.com

Thank you :)

Incidentally she has the 55-300mm Nikon but she's been told that the 70-300 is a much better lens. I hope that's true before she spends the money on another 300mm zoom.

Tamron makes a well regarded 70-300mm lens with VR which is similar to the discontinued Nikon version which would be fully compatible with the D7100. The newer Nikon DX versions do not currently allow one to turn off VR. The Nikon FX version is good but sells for over $700.

Thank you ... I'll suggest to her that she look at the Tamron as well.

The 55-300 delivers fine image quality. The drawback of that model vs the 70-300 models it the relative slow focus speed. Most everyone trying sports with the 55-300 changes.

A Tamron 70-300 SP VC lens will be less than 350 bucks and do very well outdoors.
I had this lens and it's nice and sharp.
The image stabilization is really unnecessary when shooting sports fyi.
A Tamron 150-600 version 1 would be excellent for the long fields of soccer and can be had used
for under 700 now. It is heavy and a monopod really helps. I recently shot
a softball game with it and it worked great. I think the 300mm will be somewhat
limiting depending on what type of shots she's after.

Thank you. I know she has a monopod so I'll suggest that she looks at the 600 as well.

This might lead down a path that shouldn't be followed, but you can rent lenses from places like BorrowLens or LensRentals, for a weekend or week-long hands-on investigation, rather than relying on just suggestions and online reviews. The 70-300 lenses are everyday, all-day sized lenses. The various 150-600 models are significantly larger and heavier. This difference in size steers many away, sometimes after they've already made a purchase without hands-on experience. Others also use rentals for specific lenses for specific events where owning the lens full-time isn't justified.

Rent one first to see if she will get the results she's looking for. I love my nikon 200-500 for wildlife photography and I'm sure it would be great for soccer games.

I'm an advanced amateur and I can get by with less than highest quality, highest cost lenses. I like the 18-200 that came with my D7000. It's sharp enough for my needs and was also rated pretty high for its price point.

Just a suggestion...My wife and I just returned from an extended trip to Europe. We met another traveler from the states who was shooting with a D7100 and a sigma 18-250 DC. He loved it as an walk around/all around/do anything solution. He also shot high school sports. Some of the shots he shared looked very good. Bought used from KEH (??) with 6 month warranty for $325.

The reviews I've read say;

No VR ON/OFF switch; you now do that in your camera's menu system.
