Yes, seeing thing real in an unreal way... then visually, in our mind's eye, we have the mental task of recreating what and how the subject looked in real life ... Real life, like with a telephoto lens from a distance. Now someone can use that as a Psychology Dep PhD Thesis.

I found this book that shows how to make different accessory lenses. One interesting one I tried was taking a clear marble, putting it in a plastic plumbing tube and using it as a fish-eye lens. The tube has to be wide enough to fit over the lens projection and rest against the camera body. Not terribly sharp, but interesting.
