Phone and internet out on NYC for long period. Went to Barnes and Noble with my old Acer Vista laptop. Couldn't get a continuous connection there to read my emails. When finally got phone and internet at apartment, the lap top displayed:" cannot find an internet ". Played with it for a quite long time clicking on find internet connection, but no luck. Where did the driver go? I now have an old laptop that only shows what is on the hardrive. There are innumerable Wi-fi signals in the area but the lap top cannot see them.
Did you download a newer driver?
Your puter might be too slow for wifi if its really old. The standards have changed. Should work, but.....
Check the wi-fi setting to make sure you are not in airline mode - that could affect it.
It may be that the network adapter went south. I had that happen on my desktop. I installed a new adapter and the issue was solved - 1.5 years ago. You may also purchase a USB network adapter - not very expensive. It's worth a try. Unfortunately, there might be other causes.
Good luck,
Mark

On older laptops there is sometimes a switch called the “radio button.”
It might be a touch sensitive icon on the keyboard somewhere and I’ve even seen it as a physical switch.
If you’re Internet was out it might have been because of a storm and, as Mark suggested, it blew out your network adapter.
Is it a Mac system with an Airport Extreme router?
A new network adapter should be about $10-12.
