For years I have been using a DSLR for wild bird and landscape photography but I am tired of lugging around the gear and am considerng a Superzoom. Which of these would you recommend, a Panasonic FZ150, a Canon SX40 or a Nikon p150?

Thanks for your help.

After reading your list of suggested camera. I'd still opt for at least a Nikon D7000 and a 600mm f4 lens with gitzo tripod and a wimberly head.

Just saying. . . :-)

I think you meant the Nikon P510?
I took some shots with one of these in the store a couple months ago and when I got my card home and looked at the images, I was amazed that such a small sensor could take that good of an image!

I recently got the SX40 and am totally fasinated by it - that lens is the perfect walk around lens... Its 24mm to 850mm lens is great... You can hand hold at 840 and show NO jiggle.... I wil never go back to a DSLR...

Any one of those three would fine. Try out each of them to see how they feel in your hands. Each has it's pros and cons. I choose the SX40 because I have been very pleased with the Canon models I have had in the past. Everyone in the family has a Canon camera that is suited to their style. Only realize that you are not going to get the same image quality that you would get with a DSLR.

I use an SX40 as a second camera for times that I don't want to carry around my gear.

I have owned the Panasonic FZ10, 20, 30 and the FZ150. Plus 3 of the Fuji Super Zooms and the Sony DCS-HX100V all of which have served me well. My logic is that for around $500 I could not begin to touch a decent telephoto lens for my DSLR with 24X or greater range. With the new found speed and shot to shot times of the newer cameras I have been able to get some much better shots. Now the FZ 200 with its constant F2.8 and 12 shot per second rates will be my next super zoom. I also have the 1.4 and 2x extenders for moon shots. These cameras are perfect for the Moms and Dads who take all the sports shots of their kids from the stands with their long reach.Plus us nature guys can get a few birds along the way. Also when I go on vacation I did not want to drag my big iron along. I take a pocket camera and the superzoom. I also don't stand out with my big white lens.

Barr,
I personally think any of the three cameras you listed would be a good choice....keeping in mind that none of them is a be-all, do-all camera. They all have distinct advantages and disadvantages over the others.....and it may well be worth waiting just a bit for reviews and sample images of the new Panasonic FZ200. For what it's worth, I've been quite well pleased with my Canon SX40 and I'm attaching some photos to show why. ALL of these photos are on the "Auto" setting and have received no editing whatsoever.

I am on the same quest as you. From research till now I was going to choose for the Nikon 510. The other super zooms mentioned here do very well but the Nikon has the most powerful zoom, and takes sharp pictures at the long end as long as there is enough light and the subject is not moving too much.
But the announcement last week, of the Panasonic fz200, changes everything... Less zoom, but 2.8 at the long end!! (and a couple more advantages, like a much wider lens)
But you have to wait about six weeks thenÂ…
