Surprise visitors to some very tall trees in Alameda. I don't know yet whether the two I saw are nesting or just making a temporary roost/lookout in these trees.

I've never seen examples of this particular raptor before.

Nikon D500 and 300mm f4 VR PF lens handheld at about 125 feet. 1/2000 sec f4 ISO 200

Excellent photos of a fine looking bird. I hope he gives your more opportunities. I saw one in the Berkeley hills two weeks ago, could be this one. Nice work pmackd!

I see these birds in the area quite often. Wish I could get shots this good. These are exceptional.

Thanks. This was due to a burst of good luck. I was taking photos of egrets and caught a glimpse of an unfamiliar bird high above. Turned and started shooting. Saw the bird alight in some tall trees and headed over there. Of course carrying an outfit as good as D500 + 300 f4 PF helped.

Very nice photos !
I am an avid Kite fan, as you can see by my avatar.
We used to have a pair that flew in our canyon, but haven't seen either one for quite some time... :-(
