I have a D500 with two lenses to choose from for my Grand Canyon trip. One is a DX 16 to 80 f2.8/4 and the other an FX afp 70 to 300 4.5/5.6. I need to travel lite so only one of the two lens is going to make the trip. Thanks in advance

Personally, if I had to take just one, it would be the 16-80mm. You will want to capture the magnitude of the canyon and need a wider field of view than the 70-300. On the other hand if you are trying to shoot birds and bears, the 70-300 is the way to go!

Considering the scope of the Grand Canyon, I would think that the 70-300 would be far too limiting in the perspectives it would offer. I would opt for the 16-80, but that's just me.

I would also recommend the 16-80mm. On your crop sensor D500 the field of view will be 24-120mm
a good landscape range. Also the 16-80 is one of the best DX Nikon lens made.

You might want to consider buying a Tamron 16-300 (I have one & like it). Also, there's the new Tamron 18-400 super-zoom to consider.

16 - 80 will be right for the G. canyon. You will use the 16 to 35 range most. Been there, done that.

I was just there and my pocket Sony HX90V with the 24-750 mm Zeiss lens did a great job. And, I can put this camera in a belt pouch and hold my wife's hand. But, you will have to take both lenses to get what I can get with one, and at 8 times the weight of mine.

Thanks, but I didn't ask about a different camera.

If you want to take the same photos everyone gets, take the wide angle lens. If you want to get images fewer photographers get, take the zoom.

Use the 16-80 and plan to do some nice panoramas.
