Has anyone had any experience with using ON1 as a Raw processor as a substitute for Lightroom. I understand that ON1 will be upgraded in June os this year and I an curious to know if it is simpler to learn than Lightroom. Lightroom is OK but the learning curve is much harder for a first time user and I am thinking that ON1 will be much easier with the same features. P3

Before making any commitment, download the trial version and see what you think.

I have nt used Lr since ON1 came into my life. Is it easy to learn? We have a SIG which is great. Anthony Morganti has you great series on it, and so does Matt K. for about $100.00. I fell ON1 is better. Try the 30 day trial.

I've been using On1 since the re-rite of the whole program late in 2016, a very frustrating period in my time. The program has improved greatly over those early days but it is not an easy learner but I now use it as my stand-alone RAW processor. If you are familiar with Lightroom, the sliders have essentially the same name, description and function. Tons of video tutorials are available on-line at no cost. Try the 30-day free trial and give it a whirl.

I import into Lightroom, make a few adjustments, and then often do further adjustments in ON1 to finish up. I certainly don't know that it is the best, but I found it fairly easy to understand with effective results.
The more I post process, the more I understand that it is a learned process which can easily be overdone, or otherwise destructive. There is a learning curve to any process.

On1 is a nice program after making significant improvements recently. Watch the videos, download the trial. Yes, there is a learning curve.

A point to consider: While On1 touts the “no subscription” approach, the cost for a stand alone copy is only slightly less than a year of Adobe. And, if you opt for their “perpetual license” (free upgrades as they come out), the cost is just about equal to the Adobe subscription. Until Adobe raises the rate again.

In my opinion, On1 does some things better than LR ( I especially like that you don’t have to Import, and the local adjustment brushes work well), LR does some things better than On1 (particularly in the Print tab). It will take you some serious time and effort to learn enough to compare the two and decide which one fits you better.

Here's the reality of postprocessing. Most all programs worth their salt do almost the same thing. They help you adjust color, tones, blacks, whites, contrast, lens corrections, spot removal, sharpness. They have brushes for specific adjustments. They have gradient filters. Masking features. File management opportunities and exporting options. Most of them work with Photoshop CC and Lightroom Classic as plugins or as standalone programs. These programs have different filters which are just actions created from the same sliders you are using to make minor adjustments. On1 is good and so are the rest. Lightroom is at the top of the list along with Photoshop. There is a reason all good programs work with and as plugins to the Adobe programs and not visa-versa.

EVERY program you use has a learning curve. The more you know about the program prior to using it, the more effective will be your use of it. ON1 is a great program, as are many others, but they all require the user to understand and know the program well in order to use it effectively. There are no good shortcuts to creating well-crafted images. You might consider paying someone else to process your photos if you do not want to learn the required software. I do believe that digital photography has put some photographers "behind the curve" as digital photography does require knowing digital photography processing software.

Like Kmgw9v, I use both. There are too many features I'd lose if I abandoned LR. On1 has a longer learning curve, mainly because you would not use it just to use the develop module. A big selling point is it's seamless integration with the effects module, which is outstanding.

As a first time user, LR editing is as easy as it gets. Most people get hung up on trying to use it as a file browser, which it is not. It is a digital asset manager, run by a database. You cannot right click on an image and open it with LR, nor can you make an association with the raw file type so it always opens with LR. You must import an image into the catalog (database). Once you wrap your head around that, the rest is relatively easy. LR is the King when it comes to fast editing of large numbers of files. Only Capture One gives it a run for it's money. On1 is not quite there yet, but it is getting closer in leaps and bounds. Download the trials, become a member of a photo club and you'll make a better informed decision.

I use on1 and dropped lightroom soon after getting it, Really like it and find it easy to learn, there are a ton of video's out there.

Highly recommend you down load it first and try and make sure it will run on your computer before you buy.

With 30+ episodes in his Mastering On1 Photo Raw 2018 series, Anthony Morganti does a very nice job explaining and showing the steps in using the program. It is free.

I use Lightroom, ON1 and DXO Photolab. Lightroom for the Cataloging and ease, On1 I find Resize I use the most and DXO Photolab ( complex but the best results).

Try it first, but decide quickly because they're having a limited time offer of $69.99.
