Welcome. Basketball is tricky, I shoot wide open at 1/600 to 1/800. Also found setting a custom white balance with a grey card most helpful in getting colors right. Every gym is different lighting!
I also use burst mode......makes for a lot of deleting but once in awhile I get a nice shot. My grandsons team was pretty thrilled when I created a collage for the players. will attach one. ( gave them a small 8x10 with a full size 24x36 on disc which most moms printed at walmart)
Welcome to the Hog, enjoy.

Hi, I’m 51 and love taking photos of my two boys playing sports. I’m a stay home mom In hopes to do something in photography. I want to be able to capture the best photo and then transform the photo into a great and exciting photo. My boys play Basketball, Baseball, Footballl and Hockey. I think I have outside down but hockey and basketball are so hard. I really love taking photos it keeps me very relaxed. I also take photos of my kids teammates and set up a Shutterfly account. In the past I’ve taken my photos and scrap them to make a team album

Does any one have any advise for her with her auto focus system? Such mode , Spot , group ,etc.
I would use single point focus, and continuous. Then maximum frames per second for a burst of shots and maintaining
continuous focus the entire time. Shoot raw if you want to edit pictures, jpeg if post processing is minimum.
In between volleyball and hockey games if I had a good picture, I'd connect with my phone and get the picture
there, do a quick edit and post to facebook or text to the parent for them to post.
Welcome to UHH Monkeymom, glad you joined us. As previously stated, indoor sports are very due to very poor lighting in most gyms. Need a fast lens and higher ISO to do well.
Have fun, learn and enjoy the forum.
