I shoot in raw (Nikon NEF), and am wondering how to save my work in Photoshop.

The same here, NEF files. I process my work in ACR and PS and save the final images in .psd. At that point, if I need to post or print an image, I simply open it, and save it as a .jpg file. I rarely save the .jpg files afterwards, as I can simply make another one from the .psd file. Oh, I also lock the .psd file so I can make sure I don't accidentally change it at some point.

Obviously, we are all different and we do things our convenient way. I save my work as Tiff files.

Follow-on questions to Bob, William and Macbadger, our OP:

1a. Working in PS may take 30-secs to 30-minutes+, does both the PSD and TIF saved from this edit session retain all the edit steps performed?
1b. If yes, what is the long-term difference to saving to PSD vs TIF from PS?
1c. If no, which format retains all the edit information from PhotoShop?

I honestly do not know, but since it's a rainy morning in Los Angeles, it's time for experimentation.

A quick experiment shows that neither the psd nor tif retain the History of editing steps used but both retain the layers. I do not think that tif supports Photoshop Smart Objects.

CHG_CANON,
The only files I save as .tif files are those which are created when scanning film to be edited in PS. Thus, I have little experience with layers in .tif format. So, my replies are PS related.

1a- The steps I use in processing pretty much remain the same from photo to photo. Each of these steps involves and includes creating layers, or layer groups, for each portion of the processing. Thus, in maintaining the layers in the .psd format, I inherently retain the steps I use in processing. I also lock the final .psd file so I can't accidentally overwrite it.

2a- In some cases, if I discover a new or better processing procedure, I can copy a finished .psd file, open it, and remove or insert layers to experiment and determine if this new procedure would be of benefit. I've posted some reworked images incorporating different process steps.

Again, I use .psd format due mostly to familiarity with it. (I've been using PS since 2002 or so). In choosing .tif for scanned images, I did so because of the lossless characteristic of that format. It also "plays nicely" with ACR.

If you work in other Adobe products and other software that can read them, psd may open faster, otherwise tiff will do just fine.

Don't know if this will be any help since I don't use PS. I do use NX-D, PSE 15, and occasionally Affinity.
I prefer making prints from .tif files.

I generally save as TIF, as it is more universal than PSD. Just about all editors and image viewers can open TIF files.

That all depends on the use of the files!

Good question. I shoot Raw (Pentax) DNG or PEF, process in PSD, short term store in PSD or TIF, store or archive in TIF. Share and Publish in JPG.

I save everything that I do in Photoshop (not Lightroom) in PSD. I can ALWAYS reopen the image and save a copy to tiff later.

I shoot raw and everything goes into LR. A few things go into PS. The result is saved as a .psd file and goes back to LR.

The .psd file is fully editable and basically just like a raw file. A .tif is like a bitmap, which has all the parameters that go into the production of the image baked in, so it's like a .jpg in that editing is limited. True, a .tif can be 16 bits instead of 8 bits as in a .jpg, but it's still not as editable as a raw file.

I save layered images as psd. It's the native Photoshop file since I use Photoshop I figure they know what they are doing. But if I am working on a huge image, I'm talking about an image that may be as much as 2GB in size, I'll use tiff. I think psd will only go as large as 1GB but tiff will allow you files sizes up to 2gb
