Hi, I’m new to Nikon this year and I wanted to know what would be the first lens to purchase to use with the D850 for landscape work?

Other than Zeiss, I like the Sigmas - 24 1.4 or 24-35 f2.

It depends.
I use my walk-around, an 18-200. It allows me to compose in the camera.

Longshadow nailed it in my humble opinion. You could use a prime or the conveniences of a zoom. I tend to favor zooms precisely because they are convenient and since landscapes are usually within the realm of the f8-f16 aperture range the images are going to be very sharp anyway.
If I were in your position I would go with the 24-120 f4 VR.

The easy way out is the Nikon 28-300, which gives you the utility of capturing everything. That being said, I am going to suggest a Tamron 24-70 G2 as a faster lens, and the Tamron 70-200 G2 for detail. I've gotten lazy in doing landscapes over the last few years, always using a wide angle lens to get "the big picture." But, after watching Thomas Heaton's YouTube channel, I am using the 70-200 to get a tighter image on a portion of the landscape, which I think, results in a nicer image.

There's usually always "sub-pictures".

Sometimes you can stop at the gift shop and buy the postcard. It's a lot cheaper than a new lens. <big grin>

the Nikon 28mm is a decent choice.. Sigma also makes a good lens in that range.

I have a Nikon 24-70mm f2.8 lens firmly married to my D810 camera body. If I was to purchase a D850, there would sadly have to be a divorce and the lens would remarry to the new body. There is a sexy new girl I've recently learned about, the Nikon 14-24 2.8, but I've resisted her allure.

You could carry about 4 primes and switch them out at your leisure, as land tends to stay put and wait for you, or a good short to medium zoom stopped down a bit if you want faster, more precisely composed images.
