Lightroom - won't show Import dialog box

Lightroom Classic CC won't display the import dialog box when importing files...I have the show import dialog box in LR checked but Windows 10 doesn't show Lightroom as an option for Autoplay for memory cards. It does show Bridge which I have been using but I'd rather use LR. Any suggestions?

If LR continues to show the last image that you worked on when you're trying to import, check the LR icon in the taskbar at the bottom of the screen. If it's flashing, click on it to bring up the Import screen.

I'm not quite sure about the Autoplay problem that you're having, but if you right-click on one of the files that you're trying to import, you should get a dialogue that says "Choose how Windows opens this type of file". If LR isn't displayed as an option straight away, click on "More Options" at the bottom of the list. I believe that Windows differentiates by file type rather than the source (card reader, hard drive etc).

Windows treats removable drives differently, and has the LR option. But not for memory cards. The Windows associations for file type show only PS but not LR as selections for default applications

If you select the following:-

Open with>Choose default program> (scroll down) More options> (scroll down again) Look for another app on this PC

then navigate to Program Files>Adobe>Adobe Lightroom and select the Lightroom executable file (the one with the Lr logo beside it). That will make LR the default opener for all files of that type within your PC (which you may or may not want).

If you don't want that option you could have your camera generate raw files and get Windows to open them with Lightroom, and when you import them, have LR copy them as DNG. You could then have PS as the default opener for DNG (jpg, tif etc), so LR will open only the incoming raw files.

"Look for another app on this PC" is not given as an option for NEF or DNG files. Funny, Illustrator is given as an option.

Are you sure you scrolled down far enough? "Look for another app on this PC" is in a different font - light blue. I would have thought it was a standard feature of Windows Explorer's right-click options. It's doubly funny because LR is purpose-built for opening raw and DNG files.

You could try:-

Right-click then select Properties>General (tab)> [Change] (where it says "Opens With").

No luck. There is no option to open files with an application on the computer. Note, I am running the latest version of W10 with the April update.

Sorry - can't help you beyond what I've suggested. My W8 gives me those options.

Success! After uninstalling and reinstalling LR, "Import photos" is listed as an autoplay option for memory cards.
