I just purchased a Canon 5D Markiii. I have used a Canon 70D and have all the Efs lenses I need. I now need a lens for my Markiii. I have the Canon 70-200 2.8 L is.
I am debating between the Canon 24-70 4L is, or the 24-105 4Lis. I need a lens to take hiking. ???? Close ups of flowers, landscape and my dogs.
Suggestions please?

I'd like the little extra reach in the 24-105.

If I was purchasing glass for you it would be Canon 24-70 4L is, I would look at the Canon Refurbished program, That lens is currently unavailable. The other option would be, EF 24–105mm f/4L IS II USM Refurbished, 779.20 USD, also out of stock. Keep an eye on the site.

I like my 24-105mm L, fairly large lense, but bit smaller then the 24-70mm L and for carry the added focal length doesn't hurt...

If you're concerned about weight, I'd suggest one of the EF 50 f/1.8 lenses or the EF 40 f/2.8 pancake. Very sharp lenses with a size and weight that seem to add 'zero' to the camera weight. The IS-enabled zooms are much larger and heavier, although not to an impractical level for hiking or walking around. I think the 24-105 II is the better choice.

The 24-70 coupled with your 70-200 are a perfect set of walking around lenses. Would like to throw out one other suggestion. I recently purchased the Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM and it gives me a wider angle and is really good for when you are trying to capture more in the scene, especially when you cannot move further away from the subject. It also comes in an f2.8 version.

Definitely the 24-105L II. I've got the 16-35 2.8 and if you are considering that focal length, get the f/4 version. It's not as fast but it has IS, costs less and will get the job done...

The 24-105L has the benefit of greater reach and is stabilized, but the 24-70 L USM II is a far better lens. Its a trade-off. Either lens on a 5D Mark III may be too heavy for hiking for some, but everyone is different. By the way, I love the family portrait! Can I assume that's the dad and mom?

The above lens is a great one, I have it. But, it is an EFs, crop APS-C lens. The OP has a EF mount for Full Frame.

An advantage for the 24-70F4L is that it focuses to 0.7x (at the 70mm FL). The 24-105F4L II only focuses to around 0.2x.

An obvious advantage of the 24-105 is reach; for some landscapes that may be an advantage, depending on your (photographic) seeing.

Thank you. They have a used grade 9 at Camera West in WalnutCreek. I think I will go with that.

Thank you. I am not at all concerned with weight. Just only want to carry one lens when hiking as I usually have one or two dogs with me their water and a fanny pack.
