Sorry--I missed any earlier post you might have had on this lens, and am curious about your experience and what went wrong. I'm interested because I have one myself, and find that focusing in particular is VERY tricky. I recently did some bird shots similar to yours, where other objects in the field of view were confusing the focus. I finally had to mount the rig on a tripod, go to live view (I have a Nikon D800), zoom in, and focus manually. The results were great, but I'm glad no one, as it were, had a gun to my head! Thanks!

While on a visit to Cades Cove the auto focus stopped working and had to go to manual I have tremors in right hand so trying to handhold really didn't work . The lens had 6 years warranty so
I called they directed me to their web site all I had to do was fill out the form pack it and ship FEDEX cost $30.00 when they got it they claim 3 day turn around but the process was about 10 days
total. I use the lens on a Nikon D7100, I have tried it on a D810 and it seems to work better on the DX and less weight. I had the lens on a couple of 3 week cruises and one was to Alaska. The
trip in Denali was dusty and it got lots dust on the outside so I didnt get a detail report on what the problems might have caused the problem but I guess that might have caused the auto focus
to stop. I hope this helps and your questions answered. I can private message if you want to discuss the subject more. Thanks Jim

And thank you for the reply, Jim! I'm guessing you're right about the environmental conditions gumming up the autofocus. Something I need to do is go out in the field (or the back yard) and do some real testing on subjects that aren't moving and aren't complex to see if the lens/camera combo is working the way I'd hope it would. I know there are ways of tuning the combo, but I'm hoping that's not necessary. Glad things seem to be working OK for you--happy shooting!
