I live in Broward and our Camera Club has been to Gulfstream Race Track for daybreak workouts. You are shooting to the east, get good sunrises behind the horses and can stand on the last turn at the head of the run for home and get cool action shots. Jockies will often talk top you while they walk their horses.

Try the water front by the Miami Arena. Great reflections and a really nice skyline. You can do some nice panos, get colorful bridges and sometimes some well lit private boats. Plus it is right off of I 395.

Our club is going to Kirby Storter park on US 41 week after next to shoot the Milky Way if you want to come---a bit longer ride but good shooting.

Do you have anyone who would like to came as a guest judge for our monthly contest?? We could send a judge up to you in return if you are interested.

If you want to see photos of the places I mentioned above--PM me and I can send you links.

Larry

Not sure how far Largo is from West Palm, but the Florida Botanical Gardens are a great place to go...

Only a half hour away...

Wetlands is good for birds (better earlier in the season)
-might also see alligator and turtles
Green Cay Wetlands is also nearby (same comment)
-unusual, but have seen bobcats here
-has a nature Center...check the hours

These are only a couple of miles apart

Loxahatchee and Wakodahatchee Wetlands are fantastic places for birds that are close to you if that interests the club.

Also mornings and evenings in the Largo Nature Center/Park on Highland and East Bay.. (this is a combo nature park and walking/bicycle riding park.. 1 mile paved track with wooden paths inside the oval for walking and a 1/4 or 1/2 (I'm not sure which) boardwalk around a pond/lake that is full of wildlife including osprey, 2-5 alligators, otters, and multiple species of birds. the paved oval has a canal/stream on 3 sides.. golf coarse on the east across the canal, a large wooded area on the south across the canal and parkland / model plane flying area to the west across the canal.. the canal goes out to the inter-coastal and it is rare that there are no birds there. This park is free and open sunrise-sunset. The other is Honeymoon Island... entry fee is $8.00 per car or something like that ... free to veterans with proof.. and it is full of birds and wildlife.. also take the ferry from there to Caladesi Island.. (I think it is about $10-$20 per person..) and it is full of birding... The Teco electric plant just south east of Tampa is a great place to see manatees in the winter and early spring as they love the heated water from the electric plant and it is free. There are plenty of magazines and brochures provided by the State of Florida and the Department of Wildlife... etc. that are free for taking... The Everglades is a great location for shots.

Everglades Holiday Park; Airboat tours (several available); Alligator Alley; Snake Road (off the Alley); Lion Country Safari (in WPB). I used to live 10 minutes from the Everglades. Anywhere in this natural habitat is good. You would be pushing your time frame a bit as you are almost 50 miles away, but well worth the ride.

I agree with others that Wakodahatchee Wetlands (for dozens if not hundreds of Wood Storks nesting) and Green Cay Wetlands, both in Delray Beach, are wonderful for birds.

While your information is accurate....Largo is WAY more drive from West Palm Beach than they are wanting. I'm guessing that some people get Largo confused with Key Largo.

A small trip to Mounts Botanical Gardens, next to WPB airport. Beautiful flowers and a wonderful sculpture series of figures completely made of refuse/trash taken from ocean beaches. It is there until June 3.
