Fotodiox 6x9 diffuser question

How do you get the sides of the diffuser to stay rigid when it's on the speedlight? Mine collapses inward which I think would distort the light coming from the flash. Seems there should be some mechanism that is inserted into the diffuser to support the sides? Here's a like that shows the diffuser with the sides supported. https://fotodioxpro.com/collections/light-modifiers/products/sb-fldbl-6x9

I got this idea from someone else.
Get some wooden skewers and slide them into the seams at the corners of the diffuser.

Thanks Rick. I was thinking there might be some kind of metal insert I could leave in the diffuser, but I haven't been able to find anything. I may give this a shot. Bill

Did you put them on all four sides or just the long sides?

I ran them up the diagonal seams that run from the flash head to the end of the diffuser.

I have used the skewers awhile but recently with a new diffuser, stuffed it with those large clear packing bubbles that came with some new equipment. Works well and I haven't broken one yet. Did break a skewer once, a bit of a problem.

Excellent idea Don, I may give that a try myself.

PIECES of metal coat hangers can be bent and used to make a frame to stiffen the device .

Sounds like a great solution.
Was there any noticeable light loss with the bubbles?

You could try to insert a stainless steel wire along the edge , one thin enough to be flexible, but also rigid enough to stay put!

Probably from someone on the Macro forum.... The need for “girdle stays” is a known remedy there. Not sure why the manufacturer hasn’t corrected this.....
