The San Diego Zoo will likely have to serve as my substitute for a trip to Uganda or Rwanda to (hopefully) see the gorillas.
Not rated as the best gorilla display, but certainly fine in my estimation.
They do not let all their gorillas out at the same time. The staff member with the hat explained that he was showing video on his smartphone to the young male. He had recorded it earlier in the day when the gorilla's mother and brother had been allowed to roam. The young male sat there for the whole 15 minutes we watched, just mesmerized. I had no idea.
No. 4: the staff explained that their oldest gorilla, Maka, just likes to position himself back to the glass and contemplate the world around him. The attractive woman peering over his shoulder was a bonus.

Thank you, Karin. Last summer they opened up a $ 68 million "Africa Rocks" section with more realistic terrain. You might want to go back.

Dave - Nice shots and good story from a fine zoo. chase
Very good shots. The SD Zoo is definitely a great substitute for Africa. Was there as a kid and enjoyed it very much. Will have to put it on my bucket list to go back too. Am sure there has been many changes over the years. Mahalo for sharing.
